I would suggest coloring it all red and then using the green/yellow color at full opacity on the bottom and then working your way up the fruit, lowering the opacity of the brush as you go.

If your using photoshop or GIMP you can blend in the colors with the smudge tool. So personally, I'd color it all red first and then add the green, and blend it in. You could always use a gradient, but that wouldn't look as good. I can try to find a tutorial on what I mean, since I SUCK at describing things. >.<

Also in GIMP, you could color it red, select the red area then use the airspray tool in the lighter colors and play with the opacities to create perfect shadowing.

but if you're doing it gimp, make sure you use layers in case of any mistakes here and there. i've noticed when i do the colouring on gimp i leave each colour on a different layer just in case if the blending messes up here or there so i don't have to erase the entire layer.
