| There are many things that can be criticized about the dub, but is there any changes in the dub that you liked?
For me, personally, I thought that DiC did a great job in the music. I did not really like the original Japanese background music as much and it felt weird hearing it in Cloverway dub. |

| We're allowed to talk about foreign dubs right?
I think the first french manga renamed Queen Serenity Sélène. I though it was a nice change. (She sometimes reverted back to Serenity for no reasons though) I know it's common among royals to have the same name from mother to daughter but having slighly different names was a nice change.
Boro (Does he even come here anymore? I sort of miss him) told me the hungarian dub called the Sailor Soldiers "fairies". if you take it on the heroic fantasy aspect of the word, it's kind of cool.
I really liked how the french dub didn't give a name to Tuxedo Kamen until "L'homme masqué" became the usual. Mamoru would always introduce himself as "Just a masked face" in the early episodes.
As for the english dub, I though the little flashback in the first few minutes of the first episode wasn't a bad idea.... If only they used sort of "shadowed" footage where you couldn't see Serenity's face or who were in the reincarnation bubbles thingies.
The insert songs. I love the english insert songs
Calling the Stick a Wand was much more fitting IMO, also |

| As I've said before, I have SO MUCH LOVE for the dub, before I even knew Rei existed I loved Raye with all my heart. Tbh tho, there's not a whole lot the dub did better.... Except the music. I know, I know, it's the dub so it Must Be Wrong, but I legit LOVE the music in the dub. The background music, transformation music, actual songs... It all floats my boat. |

| I must be one of the few who actually really likes the music in both versions, but that could be because I have a liking for relaxing, jazzy music. Even as a kid watching the Colverway dub I found myself liking the music. However, for the final battle against Beryl, Carry On wins over Moonlight Denetsu hands down. There's even other instrumental music ques that I think actually fit better than in the original. Overal, DiC did end up making some pretty good music, sad they didn't end up making more.
There's even a few times where I found the dialogue changes better than the original. In one episode of sailor Moon S (the waltz episode I believe it was), the scene where Eudial's car randomly pops out of the river, and the young couple sitting by said river look on in surprise. In the Japanese version they say "What was that?", the dub changed it to "That's some 4-wheel drive." I got a really great laugh out of that.
For foreign dubs, once again with the battle against Beryl, the Italian Op theme actually rivals Carry On. Then the Germans had their own share of awesome music made for their dub. Granted much of it was never actually used in the series beyond the opening, but I still find it worth nothing. |

| Hey there! I'm going to move this thread to the Dub section of this forum. The reason is because it makes more sense there instead of just being out in the open with the general talk of the anime. Hope you have a great day! NerdyPanda |

| I know that this is a very specific example, but I like the dub line that Sailor Moon says to Nehellenia at the end of SuperS "I still pity you". I felt that would be something that she would say instead of the Japanese original line. |

| Like most of you, I LOVELOVELOVE the music in the dub ^.^ I also really love a lot of the english voice actors. They really suit the roles and the characters in my opinion. Late Classic season and most of R in the dub was THE BEST voice wise in my opinion!! If Mamoru was going to speak English instead of Japanese, I'm glad that "Darien" was voiced by Toby |

| DIC music was amazing, I love it soo much, and I also love the English Sailor Moon OST, (It just doesn't get better then Rainy Day Man) also there were a few name changes I didn't mind, like Trista, and Rini. |

| I'd say that the weight loss episode from early classic was less problematic in the dub compared to the original. |

| My first introduction to Sailor Moon was the dub. Personally I liked the English name changes they made. I mean most of them were small spelling changes or similar names. Michelle isn't a bad name, or Amara, or Trista. And Lita was a very good name, since as I know I mentioned in another thread, besides sounding like lightning, it can also mean "manly" which fits with her insecurities.
I also liked how they made Usagi "Serena", as a variation of her original name, and Rini was a nice twist too.
I also thought it was interesting that in the Silver Millennium flashback episode, Queen Serenity calls her daughter "Princess Serena." At first I thought it was an error, and maybe it was. But now that I think about it, it could have worked. Maybe PS was occasionally called "Serena" to separate her from her mother in conversation. I mean they had the same name...
Like I said, maybe it was just an error, but I still thought it was interesting. |

| Sometimes I feel like the only person who really loves this part but... Sailor Says! THAT WAS MY FAVORITE OH MY GOD. At the end of every episode I almost had my face pressed up against the TV because I was not going to miss a single second of Sailor Says! I always felt like Usagi was trying to give me tips to become a superhero/magical girl and if I just didn't cheat on tests and made sure I was nice to friends I would be well on my way, haha. Now that I'm older I still have a real sweet spot for them and I definitely see how they helped shape me as a person! Plus, they're sometimes STILL good advice, like this gem that I really need to follow @_@: " You lose more than your friend's respect when you're unreliable. You miss out on all sorts of opportunities, because people don't believe you'll come through for them. So don't be a flake. Flakes miss out on all sorts of stuff." |

| i loooooooved the girls' voices when they shouted their transformations. they sounded so powerful, they gave me excitement tingles that's p much it, though. i think once i saw the original subbed, that mentality of "oh my god my life was a lie!?" took over and it became elite over the dub. simpler times |

| I never watched the show growing up, so when I first watched it, my first experience was with it subbed.
I got to Jupiter's introduction episode and I couldn't watch anymore. It didn't help that the original version of that was one of my favorite episodes of the original series.
But I do agree that the change from "Black Lady" to "Wicked Lady" was a good change to get around the problematic nature of the name when transliterated. (IIRC, the Japanese word used for black in black lady is never used to describe a person with dark skin)
EDIT: I don't actually mind the "Sailor Says" psas at the end of the dub episodes, since I majored in TV and I know exactly why they're there. |

| Basically, DiC sold Sailor Moon as a kids show for broadcast stations, and that meant that by law it has to be "Educational and Informative" (abbreviated to EI). TV shows that are classified as EI have a whole bunch of legal requirements that they need to adhere to. Things like:
- Stations may not run advertisements featuring a show's characters during that show. (you can't advertise Sailor Moon toys DURING sailor moon
- Shows must have an interstitial of some kind to separate the show content from the commercials. (who's that pokemon and the such)
- The shows must be "educational and informative." This is pretty vague and it usually just means having some kind of PSA at the end like Sailor Says, GI Joe, Animaniacs' Wheel of Morality, etc
When DiC was dubbing Sailor Moon, pretty much nobody in the US had heard of it, so they had to make it appeal to the widest audience possible, plus DiC didn't want to deal with station managers dropping SM because of """concerned parents""" (people who have never seen the show, but get newsletters from the Parents Television Council) |
