| Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is an adventure, visual novel developed and published by Capcom. It originally came out on the Game Boy Advance in the fall of 2001 in Japan only before being re-released for the Nintendo DS in September 2005 and brought over here to the states a month later. The game stars Phoenix Wright, a new Defense Attorney who works under the watchful eye of his mentor Mia Fey. The game chronicles Phoenix Wright as he takes on clients charged with murder and who usually have a stack wall of evidence piled against them going in. Your job is to prove your client's innocence and locate the real murderer through use of contradictions in witness testimonies and through finding evidence.
The game has five stages overall with the first four being from the original Game Boy Advance version and the fifth being a special edition exclusive to the DS port, since it's the only one that utilizes the touch screen beyond just the basic controls. The game can be played one of three ways: with the touch screen and pen provided on your DS, by holding down the Y button and talking into the microphone at certain parts and the traditional way with the controls.
Controls: The directional buttons cycle through your selection, A selects and B takes you back to where you were previously. The R button brings up the Court Records and pressing R again takes you to the character profile page. The Start button pauses the game and gives you the choice to save and go back to the main menu so no matter where you are in the game you can start right back up.
The gameplay plays just like a novel with pictures would utilizing first-person-view when communicating with others to further suck you into the story from the main character's prospective. The only time we do see Phoenix in the third person is during the courthouse scenes. During the courthouse scenes you'll hear the prosecution witness give their testimony of what they saw at the crime scene and it's your job to find the lies in their testimony. To get more information out of them during the cross-examination you can press them by touching the button on the touchscreen or holding down Y and yelling, “Hold it!” into the DS mic. In addition to the courthouse you'll also be doing your own investigating outside. Talking to people, looking for clues and finding evidence all to prepare you for the coming trial.
The story is pretty solid with plenty of interesting and well developed characters and the game knows when to be serious, when to be funny and when to pull at your heartstrings and when you're doing a visual novel for a game it's important to be able to play through those emotions right to get you invested. If there is one flaw I can name about the story, it's that during an explanation about an old case in stage two they build up to what sounds like this great case with many twists and turns but when you see the actual case with your own eyes in stage four it's nothing like how it was described. To the point that had they not outright said, “This is the case we were talking about” you would have thought it was another case altogether.
Apart from that the rest are just nitpicks. Like how a lot of the objections raised by the defense would not hold up in a real court of law. Or the whole, “dead sister coming back to life through the younger sister and the younger sister somehow getting older and having her dead sister's bra size and nobody seems to notice” but that's anime logic at your finest and it's meant to be fun.
Cons: The main con in this game is in the genre like with Monster Rancher. While it can be fun the first time around the game doesn't have the most replayability. Once you know the story and everything that's going to happen the only real surprises is seeing what happens if you answer with one of the other options given during a question to see what happens. Then the fun just comes from how much you love the game in general.
All in all (wish I could be given a dime each time I say that) if you enjoy fun visual novel adventures with an anime style with a good story then Phoenix Wright may very well be what you're looking for. If not then Phoenix Wright probably isn't the best game you can get yourself on the Nintendo DS.
This is ToriJ signing off. |

| I always enjoyed the Ace Attorney games. Granted one of the other faults was that you could save and just restart if you presented an incorrect piece of evidence, or just saved whenever you heard the suspense theme.
In regards to the first game specifically, case two somewhat disappointed me in terms of building up intrigue for the final day of court. However all the other ones served their purposes well; even though it was a bonus case, case five I felt was the most complex and interesting, even though the bit at the end with the Blue Badger drove me insane. |

Good point. I didn't think about how the save anywhere function could remove difficulty. |

| I think the only time I used a guide was for the fifth case of Trials and Tribulation. Aaaaah god this visual novel is easily one of the masterpieces of its genre. I can't wait for dual destinies! |

| Awesome review! This is such an excellent game. Unfortunately I never had teh chance to actually beat it or play the rest. I think my copy of the game got stolen along with my 3ds. On the other hand, I am rather excited about the live action movie that I saw trailers for in japan. I dunno if it actually came out yet or not. xD |

Yes, but online guides you have to look for. Saving anywhere is something that can be utilized in the game. And IMO the fifth case was easily the best case, even if it was missing... MAYA! |

| Awwwwaaaah I just marathoned the first two Ace Attorney games. I was recommended them a while back but never got around to playing, then when I got my ipad at Christmas I realised I could play it on there.
I've fallen in love with this series, I love the characters and the whole gameplay. I like how even the 'unlikeable' characters are generally pretty hard to dislike. =p
But most of all I love Maya Fey OMG GIRL YOU ARE ADORABLE. I'm SO SAD that she's not in the later games, I am dreading getting to them. I adore her relationship with Phoenix, it's so pure and dedicated. Justice for All Case Two and Case Four, ommmmmg. Srsly, my heart was in my mouth the whole time.
Ugh. I'm so late to the party but I bring a whole lot of feels. ^^; |

| Better late than never.
Maya is the bested thing ever, yes. Whoever decided not to include her in the new 3DS game that went back to Phoenix is made out of poo. |

| Maya is awesome. I played the demo of the new game and I like the new girl. I just wish Maya was there, but who knows maybe they will throw her in it. I have to yet to play the whole game. |

| This makes me so sad. Why would they drop her? The impression I got is that she pretty much wasn't even mentioned in the latest game? However, isn't the Professor Layton crossover being released over here soon? And dyes in that obv. <3 |

| In America Wikipedia just says 2014. As for other places in the world: Australia and the PAL region (what is that?) are in March 2014. |

| PAL is an encoding system for broadcasting in different countries (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAL). The US uses NTSC. So PAL regions would be countries that use PAL, which is seems to be on mostly Europe, Asia, Austrailia, and African continents. NTSC is mainly North American. Edit: and another wiki article if you are curious: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAL_region |
