I didn't see a thread for Jadeite in this board and thought I would make one for one of my favorite villains in the series.
Jadeite
is the first Shitennou to appear in most versions of Sailor Moon and
the first servant summoned by Queen Beryl to gather energy to awaken
Queen Metalia. He was always a personal favorite of mine even as a kid,
just his eyes alone were enough to intimidate me when they appeared on
screen:
Just spooky.
But
what is it about him that makes him such a compelling villain? First
off let's look at his plans during his time in the series. Jadeite would
always infiltrate the people of earth, finding things in their daily
lives that he could exploit in his plans and then dispatching a monster
in human disguise to carry them out. He also wasn't afraid to get his
hands dirty himself, taking on several disguises of his own to be closer
to his own plans. His very first scheme in the anime included having
Naru's mom captured and replaced by a youma and using her jewelry store
as a means to steal energy. Taking advantage of our own greed to lure us
in.
"And I would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for that pesky Sailor Moon!"
[so cheesy it could be a dub line]
This
format would carry over to all of Jadeite's schemes and they're
actually pretty clever plans. As a species we are greedy, we do want to
find love, stay in shape, be rich and famous, etc. etc. Just the thought
of an alien coming along, observing this and then using our own nature
against us is a terrifying thought. Unlike future villains who sought
out more specific targets, because Jadeite sought out large groups there
was a higher risk of being caught up in the crossfire regardless of who
you were or what you did. He didn't care if you were a homeless person
living in a box on the street corner, you were fair game. And I think
that makes him a little more dangerous at least where his schemes were
involved.
Up close and personal he can be just as frightening.
This is seen pretty early on during episode three where Sailor Moon
confronts him directly. He stops her attack dead in its track and leaves
her helpless. But does he go in for the kill? Oh no. He
slowly walks towards our heroine increasing her fear and prolonging the moment
for as long as he can. Some would consider this a drawback "Why doesn't
he just kill her?" well, think about it; which is worse? Just being
killed swiftly or being allowed to have fear and hopelessness settle in
before you finally kick the bucket? I think most would find the latter a
tad bit worse.
I know some (not on this site) who would roll
their eyes at the fact he ran away from a rose, but that's not so much
the rose than what it represents. At that point in the story Jadeite had
two incidents to draw from where Tuxedo Mask showed up and motivated
Sailor Moon to finish the monster she was faced with and come out the
winner. A motivated Sailor Moon with hope is a dangerous Sailor Moon. I
think Jadeite realized this and knew when to retreat.
Now when
his back was pressed up against a wall he became even more scary, if
that was even possible. Going as far as threatening to burn down the
entire city if the Senshi didn't answer his challenge. Whether he was
bluffing or not doesn't matter, no hero in good conscience is going to
call that bluff. Then when he gets them there he chases them with killer
airplanes and beat the heck out of Tuxedo Mask. When Jadeite wants you
dead and has nothing to lose it shows. He was even the first major
villain to figure out who the Senshi were, but by that point it was "too
little, too late" and he was disposed of by Queen Beryl.
"I should have been a physician like my mother wanted!"
A
lot of this is based off the anime version of Jadeite, but the thread
isn't limited to the anime version. So go ahead and share your love for
any and every version of Jadeite you may have.
