Who's a fan of classical music? I used to listen to it when I was younger than I grew out of it. But one day while I was watching/listening to The Weather Channel, they had it on. Then I was like: "Oh, I wanna listen to classical music now." I found this station that has no commerials. (As of late, I'm getting static. ;; But I found my station on the net and I'm currently listening to it. They've played some famous songs that I've heard before. So who else listens to it? Hey Polaris, I'm a major fan of classical music--mainly because I played in an orchestra for nine years (violinist here). My favorite concerto is Bach's Partita No. 3. It's a gorgeous song but dammmmn is it difficult to play on violin. I learned part of it for an audition back in high school. The fingerings are so crazy it took me a few months to get it down.

I'm also a fan of the Italian Violin Sonatas (Veracini, Locatelli, Mascitti etc). And then there are classics like Beethoven's Fugue in G Minor, Tchaikovsky's Romeo & Juliet, Stravinsky's Firebird Suite, etc.

Though, I know this doesn't exactly fall under classical but I adore scores from major motion pictures like Pirates of the Caribbean (1-3 but not 4), Hancock, Harry Potter and Transformers 1. I also like the instrumentation from musicals like Phantom of the Opera and Wicked.

Though, I don't listen to a station for classical music. I just listen according to my own whims.

Oh, I have just swooned and gone to heaven with this thread. Finally, others to talk about classical music! I am so very happy. Let's make sure to keep this thread alive!

I very much love piano pieces. I am not very much a fan of orchestra or symphonies because I like simplicity and there is too much for my mind to focus on when there are so many instruments playing at once -- I want to give equal attention to them all! Razz But I will admit, I love the violin soloists. Wink

@Reiko: That is a beautiful piece! Thank you for sharing because I have never heard it before. In general, I do not know many violin pieces. So please feel free to share many more. Smile

I tend to like quiet, melancholy piano pieces really. One of my favorites is Beethoven's Sonata Pathetique (Adagio Cantabile). I've started teaching myself it but I have yet to finish!

I that Yanni's music may be a bit outdated, but I still think that he has some of the loveliest piano pieces regardless. I especially love One Man's Dream. Gosh, it just flows so beautifully.

And have you two ever heard of the pianist Maksim? Oh my gosh, the man is out of his mind wonderful. He is incredibly talented and has a bit of a contemporary feel to his music. He plays classical pieces but with intense musical accompaniments that comes off as very powerful and intense.

This one is his solo piece to Franz Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. (which is a fantastic piece unto itself. I've played it on the flute! Crazy fun. ^^) . His fingers are so gorgeous! The first few minutes are more of an intro ... skip to 4:52 because that is when it just becomes enrapturing!

I'd also recommend you listening to his Nostradamus, in which he plays the piano along with a chorus of voices. I adore it.

Wow those were some awesome songs, i enjoyed them very much and will definitely keep up with this thread for the opportunity to listen to good music. I am not very knowledgeable when it
comes to classical music, but I don't dislike it either. I rather enjoy
listening to it occasionally and I know some songs, but I rather fail at
remembering their names. D:

I think I've gotten to know some classical songs because a lot of DDR
and Pump It Up songs are remixes of them. XD But i've also learned
stuff from school too.

One that i actually remember the composer and name of the song would be Claude Debussy's Clair de Lune. Always a favorite.

Jupiter, I guess I'm incredibly biased but I adore orchestration when it comes to classical music. For one, I'm really good at zoning in on several different parts at once (this isn't limited to classical music, I do it with every genre).

Also, no offense, I'm not a fan of piano. I mean, by nature it's a percussion instrument because dynamic is derived by how hard you strike it. Percussion instruments are very limited when it comes to expression--too limited for me; I need more articulation and sublteties. I can definitely recognize the talent but most style when it comes to pianists rely on their preference in genre, not how they interpret and redesign that genre. Example, you can't exactly glissando on piano. Vibrato can't really be replicated either. I still like piano as an accessory to other music but it's still hard for me to listen to as the leading instrumentation.

The Beethoven was too soft for my taste. It would sound great in a score but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it otherwise.

The Claude Monet piece is gorgeous. I adore the string accompaniment. Such an intense context are built between all the efforts.

I enjoyed watching Maksim's sheer musicality. The song was so-so. Though, I will admit the music would not work if played on any other instrument. That's always fun to hear.

For fans of the Outer Senshi theme, this should be right up your alley. It's very intense and schmoltzy and the performer absolutely caresses the notes. I'm so damn jealous. I can't even play that beautifully using the traditional violin performance position.

It's funny that you are not big on percussion because I think drum players in general are probably my favorite. I was on flag team in high school so I made lots of friends with the band members since we performed with them. I went to a couple of DCI drum & bugle corp marching band competitions. They are amazing! Not classical music but still..

I've always loved piano and have always wanted to play it.

Btw, I really enjoyed that last video. Smile

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE drummers--REAL drummers who utilize their kits 100% (using the bell of the cymbal, taking advantage of overtones, occasional rim shot etc). This isn't classical at all but the guy is a total beast!

Yes, it's Kelly Clarkson. However, it's his best drum cover to date. If you don't want to listen to the whole thing, skip to 2:50. But, I guarantee you you'll watch to watch the whole video.

Anyway! I love drumming. But that's in regards to more upbeat music. When it comes to classical music, I prefer full orchestras.

SailorBAMF, Clint Mansell is a champ. I love Lux Aeterna from Requiem.

@SailorBAMF -- I think Clint Mansell is one of the best composers out there. His music just does something to me. It is completely enamoring to listen to. I especially liked the piece that you shared - it is so haunting and heavy and beautiful. I love pieces like that. Thank you! I will be sure to download it for myself. Smile

@Reiko -- Yah, the piano cannot exactly glissendo, but I do feel that it can crescendo and decrescendo beautifully and can create a deep emotional impact that way. Smile And yah, Maksim is a bit of a ... dramatist. lol. I do not like his music videos so much as just seeing his fingers move. Gyah. And thank you for the violin duo! Some people are just so talented.

Has anyone seen A Single Man? I think it is such a lovely movie, but the music is also especially endearing! Reiko -- the violin plays a very big part in these two piece, so you may like them!

George's Waltz by Shigeru Umebayashi. It is really like a lovely violin waltz.

Clock Tick by Abel Korzeniowski & Shigeru Umebayashi. I love the throbbing pulse of the violins here, and the layers that climb on one another in a tremulous steady rise.

Oh man classical music. >.< I was a music ed major for two years and I played double bass, so... I love it. I really miss playing in orchestra! These are just some of my favorites right now...

We played this my... freshman year of college? I don't remember. Our violin professor played it and it was heart-wrenching. I still tear up listening to this concerto. I also adore Shosty, so, you know.

This movement was probably one of the most difficult things I have ever played in my life. IN. MY LIFE. We must have practiced that opening phrase a hundred times in orchestra just to make sure we had it right. It's really awkward.

THIS MAN TAUGHT AT MY SCHOOL. He left I think the year before I started and I don't think I could have mentally handled him. But. But. U GUEIZ. D:

Second movement, because how could you not want to listen to it after that last one.

I'm not a big fan of classical music but I listen to it when I need to calm down or during the Christmas season. I listen mainly to Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker music because that's what I grew up with (I did ballet from age 3-10 then started again when I was 13 and did it until I was 14. I danced in the local Nutcracker ballet in Oregon for 4 years.).

I also really like Yiruma. "River Flows In You" is one of my favorites Smile

Also, my last year of Ballet, our class did a dance to "Habanera" from Carmen. I don't know if it fits the classical music genre but I loved it Smile *NOT MY VIDEO*

composed for a movie, but you talking about christmas reminded me of
this song.

Uh oh, classical music. While I love it, I don't know anything. But then again, I "don't know music from an earth worm" since I am a HUGE rock n' roll person. Wink (as quoted from some music snob on a forum~) but I love David Garrett's work. Taking rock songs and making them... orchestra? I don't even know if this counts as classical (probably not) but then again, I don't know much about classical.~

Edit: I realised I didn't post the link. XD

My knowledge of classical music is pretty patchy, but Bach and Mozart are the dudes, man. That shit is awesome.

The Goldberg variations are one of my favourites. No sample provided because I'm kind of running around all over the place trying to do laundry and eat breakfast and not fall over the cat, but yeah.

Wowwww so many people here who actually know about stuff I love (like Maksim, Venetian Boat Song, David Garrett, etc!). I love classical music, I've played piano since I was five. Also played in orchestra for six years (violin), and did chorus. But piano came first. Smile

Bach and Mozart are awesome. And so is Handel and Vivaldi... I had the privilege this season of listening to Bach's Christmas Oratorio at St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London... And this year I will miss having my Christmas tradition of doing Handel's Messiah sing-along. I'm kind of a choir geek!

Do you guys like classical crossover? Like Bond or Escala? I think if people like Maksim, then probably, right? Smile I also enjoy other stuff like George Winston for just instrumental piano...

What about groups like Amici Forever or Il Divo?

Can I squeal about percussion right about now? Classical music 2027930456

I was in the percussion section of my high-school's band for four years. It's such a diverse section, if you branch outside of the drums. I about melt whenever I hear a deep-toned mallet instrument, such as the marimba.

And I know this is about classical music, but I feel obligated, as a percussionist, to say that everything needs more cowbell.
