Sailor Astarte
Sheba Shingetsu Astarte
Sailor Astarte Dedication Thread Astarte
I came from the other side of the sun, I am the tenth sailor soldier... Sailor Astarte!

Introduction to Astarte

Sailor Astarte, or as she is known in her civilian persona: Sheba Shingetsu Astarte(柴新月アスタルテ), is a character from the musicals Kessen/Transylvania no Mori - Shin Toujou! Chibi Moon wo mamoru Senshi-tachi and Kessen/Transylvania no Mori (Kaiteiban) - Saikyou no Kataki Dark Cain no Nazo -

Sheba Shingetsu Astarte is a tranfer student of decent from the ancient Phoenicians. Hotaru has noted that her shadow sometimes disappears and she is referred to as "another swish person" by Elizabeth Bathory. Not much of her family is known apart from the fact that her mother was separated from her in Eastern Europe while travelling, three years ago.

Sailor Astarte in her senshi form did not play an incredibly large role in the plot of the two musicals (which were in similar with the difference being that the kaiteiban brings in Count Dracul and develops more storyline pertaining to the mythos of the Dracul Series building to its sequel Chou Wakusei Death Vulcan no Fuuin) Sailor Astarte's body is also a home to an unwelcome guest, the effects of whom Astarte refers to as Dissociative Identity Disorder. The person who has possessed her is none other than the Bible's first murderer and Count Dracul's brother- Cain.

Astarte in her 'corrupt' personality.

The dominant villain, Lilith of Darkness, plans from the beginning, in accordance with her plan of revenge against the Abrahamic God and the humans of the world, to manipulate Astarte in her favour: in their duet song Kaikou~Lilith to Astarte, Lilith describes her plan of using Astarte's powers as a "mother goddess" to create a revolutionary pure world where Lilith and Astarte reign as "Mothers".

Lilith sings about her plans and Astarte is intrigued.

Eventually, with some magic words, Astarte's true personality dies as she has predicted earlier in the musical, and the possessor, Dark Cain, assumes full control of Sheba's body. Lilith gains Astarte's full alliance (Astarte the senshi had been naturally deterred by evil and tended to attack the Samael Sword which was integral to Lilith's ploy) and their plan comes close to fruition before being foiled by a careless overlook: they accidentally brought the dead senshi back to life by opening the door to the underworld.

Sheba Shingetsu Astarte/'Good' Sailor Astarte

Sheba is introduced as a socially awkward girl whom Usagi infers stems from Sheba's incessant travelling. Sheba is discovered to be Astarte, and the senshi begin to have their suspicions and doubts about Sheba's character after she insults the Solar System Senshi's abilities.

After coming with the senshi to Michiru's concert tour in East Europe, she awkwardly and silently struggles through travelling with Usagi as her only supportive friend. Her strange behaviour once goes to the extreme in a bad joke, where she puns the name Andersen with an deru (bean paste comes out): in reply to Ami's reference to Hans Christian Andersen, Sheba replies with "Squish the manjuu(bean paste bun) and out comes some bean paste)" to bring confused and shocked looks from the senshi. Usagi, in a desperate attempt to make things more comfortable for her, forces everyone to laugh and draws attention away from Sheba's very strange comment.

In a revelations scene, Usagi and Sheba share their feelings, and Sheba reveals her mother's disappearance after which she broke down forever on the inside. Sheba confides in Usagi her suspicions that her Dissociative Personality Disorder will soon 'kill' her good personality, the one which Sailor Astarte is a part of. Her doubts of her status as a senshi and even of the existence of the planet Astarte are revealed and she then faints in weakness.

Sheba's heartbreaking mental/spiritual illness has apparently ruined her entire life for the past three years. And sadly, her pain will not end. Sheba Shingetsu Astarte is one of the most lamentable characters in all of Sailor Moon. May Astarte shine forever, invisible to the eye but sparkling red in spirit.

The Almighty Mother Goddess Astarte

Sailor Astarte and Dark Cain-occupied Astarte both draw power from the mother goddess' might. Her magic is extensively powerful and most attacks draw from Jewish theology and mythology.

Sailor Astarte:

Solomon Versus
This attack was used in aiding the Sailor Senshi. The name Solomon refers to a King of Israel who is said to have held relations with the Queen of Sheba (Sheba Shingetsu Astarte's namesake).

Solomon Jihad
This attack was used to disable the Samael Sword, a great display of the incredible power of Sailor Astarte.

Cain-occupied Astarte:

Cain the Dark
An evil attack to harm the Senshi.

Cain the Manipulate
An attack used in the Kaiteiban to as the name suggests, manipulate.

Samael Cain Solomon
Lilith and Astarte jointly performed this attack.

Samael Cain the Solomon
Astarte alone performed this attack.

Samael Astaroth
Astaroth is a mythological demon a prince of hell, named after Astarte herself.

Samael Belzébuth
Belzébuth is the french name for Beezlebub another prince of hell.

Bachalyas baryolos lagoz atha cabyolas
This is a fragmented extract from the nonsensical Wiccan chant Eko Eko Azarak (which was popularised by a Japanese horror manga by the same name). It is used to call upon a higher power (ie a god or a demon)

さざめきて流れ、炎の内に失せよ 殷盛の美に酔い、現われ出で結末をつけよ
This is a chant which is used by both Lilith and Astarte, later used in the sequel by Death Vulcan in calling upon a power to perform very strong magic.

Reversing the Tree of Life
Anti-Malkhut, Anti-Keter, Anti-Tif'eret, Anti-Yesod, Anti-Malkhut.
This chant was used by Dark Cain as Astarte and Lilith conjointly to open the door to death. It is essentially saying the middle branch of the kabbalah tree of life in reverse (without Da'at).

Some Fun Facts
Sheba most likely comes from the Queen of Sheba, who was closely associated with Lilith in myths. The queen was essentially a strong independent woman which was looked at with suspicion. The Hebrew name for Sheba is Sh'va. The Japanese name 柴 Shiba means firewood.

Astarte is a goddess associated with Birth, hence the "mother goddess". She is also very similar to Ishtar the name of a character in the Sailor Moon: Another Story SNES game.

Astarte is still worshipped by some neo-pagan religions, especially Wicca and those centered around goddesses.

Reasons Why Astarte is Amazing
Sailor Astarte is the first musicals-only sailor senshi, and her background is so different to the other senshi; she is foreign for a start and she is the only senshi to ever die permanently! That's nice different and unusual. What I love most about Astarte and the Dracul Series in general is the huge amount of mythology incorporated. Even the character Sheba herself deserves her own religious cult!

Da'at's missing because its not actually really part of the Tree of Life, its when the 10 Sephiroth come together as one.

The question I want answered is

What did Vulcan mean by "I couldn't save her"... did that mean Sheba somehow came back afterwards and was murdered or if Vulcan was there all along.

Lets not forget about the use of Samael's name!

Not only is Samael the Angel of Death; the accuser, seducer, and destroyer (so he's technically good, but really a wild card) he is also the Guardian Angel of Esau and, according to Rabbi Eliezer, "the one who tempted Eve, then seduced and impregnated her with Cain."

So that certainly explains the connection of Samael with Dark Cain, and possibly why the Samael Sword can be both a holy blade or an evil one.

Source: Wikipedia's page for Samael (which I can't link to because I've only been a member for a couple of days).
