Recently I discovered the website wewantserena and I didn't know people felt so passionately about her dub name. So which one do you guys prefer? Personally, I love Usagi. I love the way it sounds and I love the meaning (especially combined with her whole name.)
I also thought it was kinda disrespectful how they referred to Usagi as "the other name" but that's just me.  

I started watching sailor moon with the dubbed, so for me she was Serena before she was Uasgi, and honestly i don't care what her name is she's still my moon princess.

I like both names really. Serena is a good name for a Moon Princess. DIC had a typical name for her in their Promo Vid so be glad they changed it something more meaningful

Ami was going to be called Blue...

I too watched the dub first as a child, so to me it's my childhood love. I wanted to name my daughter that and wished that was my name >.>

Honestly I think that Serena, being a shortened version of Serenity wasn't a bad idea at all, I really like the continuation of the name, even if it's subtle. (ish)


Usagi is something more of recent year as I gained access to the Subs, other translations, and the fandom.  They are both the same person no matter what in my mind though.

Serena is a really good name for a moon princess! And I'm forever laughing at Ami almost being named Blue.   I feel like there would be a lot of bad jokes surrounding her name if that would have happened.

Also I hope I'm not coming across as if I don't like Serena as a name. I do think it was really good choice. But the point was to see if people had to choose between the two, which one would they pick?

Well, she's always been Usagi to me, even since childhood because our local dub actually kept everyone's names, and I'm glad for that (I was never a fan of people changing name during translations).

But I agree that they chose a meaningful dub name and not just a generic name which is nice. (The only thing I don't get is why they couldn't keep her princess name to differentiate between the two)

Probably so little kids wouldn't get confuse?

Victoria??? Hmm...I guess they would've called Chibiusa Tori then??? Who knows. Serena was definitely the better choice.

hm we have a similiar situation in germany because her name was Bunny in the dub. sometimes because of dubbing errors she was called Usagi so when i was a kid i was always thinking Usagi was some kind of nickname ..

I go either way but I think Serena was always is a good choice of a name compared to Usagi here in the States because t's still a reference to the Moon and the meaning behind her Japanese name becomes lost in translation since we have the man in the moon rather than the moon rabbit.

I grew up watching the dub so I do like the name Serena and I like how it's a short form of Serenity, but... I really prefer the name Usagi. Not so much because of how it sounds, but because of the significance behind it (and her last name) with the Asian story of the rabbit on the moon. I think it's cool how all of the girls' names have meanings that are significant to their true/former identities.

The first time I watched it, it was with the latin-american spanish dub, so I was used to Serena, but then I watched it with eng-subs and got used to Usagi, so for me, I like both and I don't mind whichever they use

I am going to be completely honest with you guys, I really didn't know that Usagi was supposed to be Serena. Yeah you can all laugh at me now... I first watched the English dubbed so I got useed to hearing Serena, but know as I hear it in Japanese I don't really call Serena, Serena anymore. Yup, I'm lame like that...

I dislike the dub names. They make me feel nostalgic, but I don't want them back. She will always be Usagi to me.

If Crystal ever got dubbed I would like them to keep the Japanese names and all the Japanese aspects of the show. I think it's a nice, small way to introduce kids and adults to new cultures without "Americanizing" everything like the dub did in some cases.

Usagi it just sounds more cute and matches her fun, childlike and innocent personality more.

i also grew up with the dubs...and like Queenie, loved the name Serena! i even based my old internet name Satrena off of it. but then as i discovered the japanese anime(god knows how i did...can't even remember anymore!) i adapted over.

as i've gotten older, i've become more of a purist type of person...so i try to stick with the japanese names. however on rare occassion, i find myself saying the english names without thinking(and hate it when that happens)...but i use them only slightly grudgingly to explain things to people who have never seen the japanese version or know nothing of the japanese names.

Usagi. That was dumb of them to change their names and I won't touch the dub with a ten foot pole. I mean Serena makes sense but...no...

They could've at least called her Bunny like in the manga o.o

Serena was probably the best name we could have gotten in that kind of localization. I'm glad we didn't get stuck with something horrendous.

Like a couple of other people here, I like Usagi, Serena and even Bunny equally. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the Tokyopop manga said her name was Serena, but everyone called her Bunny. I thought that was a rather cute way to tie into the dub version.

Because of the dub, I'll always think of Sailor Jupiter as "Lita." I adore the name Makoto, but I don't associate it with her all the time. But yeah, we really did get lucky in the English version for what it was worth.

Usagi, no question.  I grew up on the original English dub, but as I learned more about the original Japanese version and had the chance to watch it subtitled, I just grew to like the English version less and less, to the point that I just can't stand using any of the English dub names anymore.  It's why I love that the new dub is keeping all the old names.  I can watch it in my native language without wanting to throw things at the TV. XD

Like everyone else, I grew up with the 90s dub and she was Serena for me. I went back years later and tried to watch the dub again but I couldn't. It may have been the voice acting, but her voice grates on my nerves. I much prefer "Usagi" to Serena. In terms of names alone, I do prefer using the Japanese names.

I feel exactly the same. =3 I was pretty used to watching the English 90's dub and Serena fitted in alright. But I like Usagi as well. However she's still my klutzy loving Moon Princess no matter what name she's given. ♥

Think of the rose ;3 if it were called by some other name, it would still smell just as sweet. =D

I mostly grew up on the subs, so I prefer Usagi. Serena isn't a horrible name for her, but if it came down to having to make one the official name, I could only imagine her as the original Usagi.

That website is a very interesting place, haha. I could understand preferring Serena over the original name, but art is art. There are lot of elements I personally don't like about Sailor Moon, but that doesn't mean I don't respect them for what they are and what they mean to fans.

I first watched watched the dubbed version like most people,  and thought it was a pretty good name. However when I started watching the subs, I liked her original name more. I've never gone back to watching the dubs again.
