| Format:
- One-Shots (as in, what you sat down and wrote about the prompt all in one go. There is no "come back and finish it later" - Sit down, start writing, and when you start to run out of steam, wrap it up and post it here!
Theme: Avoiding Fate, or "Not Today, Trope." Ever get that feeling that your life is getting a little strange? Like conflicts arise and are handled episodically; that you work hard for it, but these weird instances crop up and you manage to make it through, but things are getting more and more intense, stranger and stranger; friends are getting ever more important… and then it hits you. Your life is now an anime. It’s not like you can stop doing what you’re doing – if you did, people’s lives would be at stake, all because you didn’t want to play along, but with all the anime stereotypes out there, couldn’t you save some of your friends along the way by warning them? Do they see it, too? The Challenge: One shot as a character that figures out they're an anime trope - it can be any of the above or any other well-known overused character generalization seen in anime or dramas - and how your character reacts to it. What story do they find themselves in, and what role do they realize they have? Do they fight their fate or embrace it? The Limit: Complete at any time, but complete between now and April 25 for the Sanctioned bonus! ((after April 25 this will no longer be considered sanctioned!)) |

| Oh my goodness, I had written this at the beginning of the month and then totally forgotten about it! So here I am, posting a one-shot I wrote weeks ago: - Trope Trouble:
He let his eyes fall half-shut, trying to hide his blue eyes. He ran his hand through his hair before he realized that it would mess up the hairstyle and quickly tidied it back up, reminding himself to get it cut. He couldn’t change the color of his eyes, and he refused to give up his hobbies just to keep some jerk determined to mess up his life at bay. Thinking about his hobbies reminded Katashi that he had a tennis match the next day. If he wanted to get his hair cut, it would have to be tonight.
Good. Blue eyes, messy, long-ish hair, and an athletic lifestyle was just asking to get himself paired with the pretty, pink-haired girl who just walked into the classroom. She was apparently fresh from some other school that Katashi didn’t care about.
Katashi’s mind raced. Should he be standoffish? No, the girls in these stories all fell for the distant boys with a tragic backstory. Katashi assumed that some people would call his history a tragedy, though he didn’t really think much about it. His parents were dead, but he had an awesome aunt who took care of him, and he enjoyed a solid life. Nevertheless, he was careful to play the game.
He had learned years ago to force himself to make a fuss when he would have rather kept his mouth shut, because apparently stoicism was attractive. But that didn’t help him decide what to do now: should he be friendly to this new girl? Would that make her more or less likely to decide that he was her perfect match?
He carefully kept his hands away from his hair, refusing to let himself muss it. He had some time to think about it - he wouldn’t do anything until he changed his look a little. He pictured himself mentally. The hair would have to change, of course, and he would have to switch out his modern square-framed glasses with his older round ones. By tomorrow, he should at least look less like the well-designed romantic interest for some intrepid girl hero. He was determined to make sure he figured out how not to act like one, as well. Without giving up on his sense of self.
Katashi looked carefully at his textbook to keep himself from glaring at the new girl. His semester had just gotten a lot more complicated.

| Yamato slowly undid her plait, running her fingers through the wavy locks of brown hair. As she finger combed the unruly mass, she thought back. Back to when she had first started wanting to die.
It was summer, she remembered. It had been the most perfect of days. A perfect day in an endless series of days in an endless, unrelenting, perfect summer. The kids had been angels, her young daughter all bubbly coos and warm kisses, her son laughing as he ran playfully up the shoreline away from each wave. She had looked out as far as she could see, straining her eyes toward the horizon, and she had felt nothing. Nothing as she held her child. Nothing as her son laughed. Nothing, nothing at all.
She sighed now, picking up the boar bristle brush from the edge of the mirrored vanity. One, two, three, she counted as she brushed, her unfocused eyes staring at the patterned wallpaper, seeing nothing. Four, five, six, she brushed. The same melodic rhythm. She smiled a self satisfied grin, just like the waves that day. She had been counting them then, too.
One, two, three. Four, five, six. They had come and gone, come and gone. The same, she thought bitterly, everything. ALWAYS. The same. Her life was a repetition. Same house. Same meals. Same chores. Same kids. Same bed. Same everything, always... she thought again. She felt herself a side character to her own life. MY OWN LIFE! she thought sourly, hot tears welling in the corners of her eyes. She couldn't bear to look at herself in the mirror. She knew what she would see - the same eyes, always the same eyes. The eyes that had looked at the sea and saw nothing changed, the eyes that saw nothing changed now.
She pulled aggressively at the bundle of hair, every day the same as she tried to wind tighter and tighter plaits, adding more and more with each passing day, one for each year she wished away. It was methodical, comforting, and she counted as she worked.
One, two, three... Four, five, six... |

- She was plucky. And good at her job - she'd been at it for a few months now, and, honestly, fighting monsters wasn't all that bad! Swoop in, do a little damage, make a speech, win the day - it was riding a high, if she were being completely honest. Sure, the start was rough, but she had gotten the hang of things and as the baddies got tough, she got tougher! She could handle anything.
She was the heroine, after all.
She hadn't ever expected this life for herself; there was nothing really special about her - she made middling grades, sat in the middle of the classroom, was average height and build and athleticism (though she had joined cheerleading to help with her acrobatics during battle), had an average family with a younger sister - honestly, nothing was unique or stood out about her, but ever since she had picked up her blasting rod and fought her first demon, she figured that maybe being completely unspecial was exactly what made her unique enough to be the heroine.
But then... Kimiko showed up.
At first it was great - they got along well and it turned out Kimiko could fight the demons, too! She needed help at first, but she was just happy to have a friend that she could share all this with - she didn't mind. They got on like cake and frosting! Best of friends! And as other girls awakened as Demon Hunters, they all stuck together, growing and fighting and growing up together - but then... Kimiko's powers kept growing, becoming stronger than even hers, despite the dissonance in their training time, and when one of the demons seemed to recognize Kimiko before it was defeated, it got Hina thinking.
Kimiko had transferred in just a week after one of Hina's heroic stories got into the news.
Kimiko had bright blonde hair and huge blue eyes.
Kimiko sat at the back of the classroom, near the window, and often looked out and daydreamed instead of studied.
Kimiko was a bit of an airhead.
Kimiko had a crush on one of the soccer players in their class - Hina had even tried to help get them together, cheering her on from the sidelines.
Hina... was not the heroine. She was the friend.
Fighting wasn't as fun anymore. Hanging out with Kimiko wasn't, either, though she continued to adore her despite herself. But just when the sting of that realization was starting to fade and she began making the most out of her supporting role, she realized she had miscategorized herself.
Helplessly pinned down with a demon's scythe cutting into her neck, she glanced over to Kimiko, who ran towards her, arm outstretched, in what had to be slow motion.
She wasn't the heroine. She wasn't the supportive friend.
She was the tragedy that would propel Kimiko to greatness.
She existed to be iceboxed.
She died bitter. |

| Yuui-sensei sighed heavily as he flopped into his desk chair. The teachers' office was buzzing with activity. The men and women were gossiping as one of them slammed a pile of newspapers onto the desk that happened to be closest to the door. Each person in the room-himself excluded-quickly ran up in a disorganized fashion and snatched a copy-hastily flipping through each highlighted section on the cover page.
"did you hear?" they said. "You're kidding? That's too close to the school! Lots of my students walk past there every day!" "Where were the cops?" "Some parent's are afraid." "Forget the parents-I'M AFRAID!"
Yuui sighed. Why were they so freaked out? This wasn't the first time something like this happened in this town. Yet every time, the teachers freaked out. Heck-EVERYONE freaked out. The cops never found any leads either-no fingerprints, no DNA-not even any trace of whatever gas, powder or flammable they'd used in these attacks. They wouldn't either. The superheroes always took care of it. The way Yuui saw it-it was a fight between two forces-good and evil. And so far, there were no casualties-just some folk taken to the hospital to be checked out. Heck, the buildings were always repaired and open the very next day, in some cases-though if they got business that next day, Yuui didn't know.
What he was wondering about is the randomness of the locations. A jewelry store, a bus-stop, a dress store, a cram school-What was it? Everyone claimed terrorists-but did everyone forget the superheroes? They showed up, kicked butt, and everyone would wake up later, confused but fairly unharmed. Yuui just happened to be outside of the cram school when it happened. He heard the screams, saw the windows break, saw the smoke, saw one of the heroes dash in-and then saw three leave-one alone, the two as a pair. By the time the cops had shown up, everything was done and over with. Yuui couldn't leave-his car was unlucky enough to be parked in the area blocked off by police tape as they tried to secure the scene. He ended up in the cafe across the street for the remainder of the evening as the investigation continued, and had to call his wife to let him know to start dinner without him.
His coworkers were still a bundle of nerves-with raised voices and pale faces-they continued to discuss the article in the paper. Yuui didn't feel like grabbing one; they'd always shown up every day or every other day. Yuui shrugged the noise off. He'd hear more about it from his wife when he'd get home, and then over, and over again on the TV and radio for the next week and a half-like all the other times, until another instance would replace it. Besides; he was covering for a fellow teacher today, and had grading to do. He took the stack of paper and the answer key that was provided and looked closely at the first sheet he'd grabbed from the middle of the pile. Marking up the paper in seemingly nothing but read, he couldn't help but grin.
This Tsukino girl was a bit of an idiot, wasn't she? |

| Yukiko was a sensible girl. Her life had always been no-nonsense. She had very clear goals in her future. Graduate high school at the top of her class. Get into a prestigious university. Find work and an international success life. Fall in love with a perfectly ordinary yet sweet and hardworking young man. Become a bride, then a housewife. Happy in a house with two children—one boy and one girl—and its white picket fences. Simple. No-nonsense. Perfect. And yet it seemed like lately the universe seemed hell-bent in kicking her off that track. First, one morning, a weird white cat-like creature with long white ears and red beady eyes appeared outside her house on her way to school. It looked at her with its creepy eyes and tilted its head, and Yukiko just knew it was up to no good. It tried to proposition her, but it was unwilling to give her a written version of the ‘contract’ it kept talking about, so Yukiko said thanks, but no thanks. Any sensible person knew you should never sign a contract without reading it thoroughly. Or asking about all the specific clauses. Then during break time, a black cat practically tumbled into her path. Now, Yukiko didn’t believe that nonsense about black cats being bad luck, but this cat had a weird crescent shaped mark on its head. She just knew it wasn’t an ordinary cat. And it was looking for something, it seemed. Yukiko convinced her that no, she wasn’t any princess by any means and no, she was not interested in brooches produced from a cat’s butt, no matter how pretty it was, and went to go eat her lunch elsewhere. And then on her way home, a yellow plush toy that looked like a tiny bear flew straight into her face, exclaiming about cards and how they were all gone and someone needed to collect them. Yukiko apologized and said she most definitely had no time to help him go around collecting these cards she had never even heard of. She suggested that he go to the nearest police station to report his missing items. Perhaps someone there could help him. The creature grumbled in disapproval and went off, presumably to find some other poor girl to coerce into his impossible task. By the time Yukiko arrived home, she had had enough. This had been such a weird day, and all she wanted to do was a nice rest free from strange animals and plush toys who inexplicably could talk. Perhaps tomorrow would be more normal, just the way she liked it. |
