Mafia Rules

Note: All rules that are highlighted in blue are able to be changed as the game host sees fit.

Rule 1: Do not take the game personally.
Like a Star @ heaven People might get aggressive, unreasonable, controlling, bossy – all of these are tactics in order to make you vote a certain way or believe what they want you to believe. Nothing is personal, don’t take it personally.
Like a Star @ heaven If you feel you have been personally attacked, please contact the Mafia Moderator Sailor Mars. He will look over the case and help you with your issue.

Rule 2: Be active – post at least twice per day phase.
Like a Star @ heaven If inactivity is suspected, you will be kicked from the game and another member will take your place. You will not receive any points for participation.
Like a Star @ heaven You should be able to dedicate at least 20-40 minutes to the game per day. If you are unable to do this, you shouldn't be playing, or you should expect to be called out on your inactivity and have it used against you. Especially if, when you post, you don't contribute to the game.

Rule 3: This is not a roleplay. Do not roleplay. Character names are given for fun.

Posting Rules:
Like a Star @ heaven Do not screenshot any private messages sent by the moderator, whether it be via the forums, Skype, text, or any other instant messaging forum.
Like a Star @ heaven Don’t edit or delete your posts.

Gameplay Rules:
Like a Star @ heaven Bold and Red your lynch nomination vote.
Like a Star @ heaven Bold and Green your nvm-don’t-lynch vote.
Like a Star @ heaven Bold and Blue your questions to the Host or the Moderator.
Like a Star @ heaven Don’t discuss this game outside of boards designated for this game.
Like a Star @ heaven Always play toward your win condition. Even if you think the game is lost, people can still make mistakes, which enables you to win the game.
Like a Star @ heaven Claim whatever you want; just be willing to back your claim up without breaking one of these rules.
Like a Star @ heaven You get one final post after you die. You are not allowed to reveal any information you may have gained from your role. Your role will be revealed when you die.
Like a Star @ heaven Day Phase - Lynching
   - Days last for 48 hours.
   - Everyone votes on whom to lynch (suspected of being a mafia member)
   - Lynches are made when a player receives greater than 50% of the vote.
   - Days without lynching may occur, depending on moderator’s wishes.
Like a Star @ heaven Night Phase - Roles
   - Nights last 24 hours regardless of how soon players finish their roles.
   - Mafia votes on whom to kill – they do this in a secret board.
   - Cops choose whom to investigate (they send a name to the moderator; moderator returns
     with that person’s role).
   - Doctors choose whom to protect (the mafia cannot kill the protected person).
   - There can be other roles; other roles, or specifications on the above roles, will be posted
below these rules. For more information, visit this site.
   - Players are NOT allowed to pressure other members to turn in roles each night. There is a
set time, and it is up to the Moderator when to end each night.
Like a Star @ heaven Winning
   - Mafia wins if their numbers are equal to or less than townies.
   - Townies win when all mafia members are dead.

Like a Star @ heaven Breaking any of the above rules will result in expulsion from the game and disciplinary action.

Warning:
Mafia can be considered a game with a high potential for intensity, as it involves accusations (sometimes wild and unfounded), strong words, and even, at times, aggression towards other characters. This is an official note of caution that this game is for people with really thick skins that fully understand that what happens in game stays in game and anything that occurs in that game thread is not a reflection of the player or of the forum, just the nature of the game itself: in other words, there is a giant "No personal offense meant" tag across everything mafia-related. However, the forum Code of Conduct is expected to be followed by all players.

If for any reason you believe this game might not be the game for you, sit out and watch a few games before deciding to sign up.

Disclaimer: If you have a hard time focusing, high anxiety or some sort of disorder that you know might be triggered by the game, then this game might not be for you. Please exercise caution when signing up.

Consequences of Breaking Mafia Conduct
If any player starts acting out of line (even within the normal scope of reactions to the game) it is understood that the game could be locked for a short period of time, wherein the players involved can cool off and apologize, or decide it's too intense and back away from the game. By signing up you agree to these terms and conditions, knowing that if further actions need be taken you could be banned from playing Mafia in the future.

Thank you Sailor Uranus  The Mafia Masterthread 4039879955  for the original Mafia rules!

A Beginner's Guide to Mafia

I'm sure if you are here, you are interested in playing mafia or at least curious about what the hype is all about! You've come to the right place. Here is a general overview of the game, explanation of roles and a definition of terms. We hope to see you in the game!

What is Mafia?

Mafia or also called Werewolf is a party game, which was created by Dmitry Davidoff in 1986. At the beginning of the game, every player is assigned to one role. The roles can be sided with the Mafia, the Town, or be a 3rd Party Role, which has its own win conditions.
The Game is divided into two phases: A day phase, in which the players can vote for one player to be lynched, and a night phase, in which the Mafia may kill one player and other roles can use their powers. The lynched/killed player is dropped of and his role is revealed to all players. The game ends, when all mafia are killed, or the mafia outnumbers the townies.

The phases

Day phase:

At the beginning of the day phase, every role that has an action in the night which leads to reports, will get their report. Besides that, the players killed will be announced. The town has time until the end of the day phase to decide, which person should be lynched. The phase ends after 48 hours, or after all players have made a valid vote. After a person is lynched, their role will be announced and the next night phase starts.

Night phase:

In the night phase, roles with night actions, so called Power Roles, can either do their actions, or choose to do nothing. The Mafia can choose a target to kill, which will drop out of the game. Communication is only allowed between the Mafia, if not stated otherwise.

When is the game over?

The game is over after all mafia are dead, or the town is outnumbered by the mafia. This happens for example, when there are only 2 townies and 2 mafia left. In this case the mafia wins. Another way to end the game is for a 3rd party role to meet their win conditions. In that case, the game will end and the 3rd party role will be the winner.

How to play good

  • The most important thing is to keep an eye on the situation. Look what roles are alive on your team and how long it takes until the game is finished. Then figure out a strategy to win.
  • Think about when to claim. If you claim too fast, the Mafia can use it as an advantage.
  • Be active! It is important to tell the others what you are thinking. Don’t hesitate because you are afraid to make mistakes, or because you think you have nothing important to say. Maybe you’ve seen a small detail everybody missed and you don’t even know about it.
  • Act as if you were a villager! The Mafia could read you if you suggest to be a powerrole and kill you. Avoid things as “Should Cop claim now?” if you are Cop, because the Mafia could get the hint.
  • Think for yourself! Don’t blindly follow a leader. Even though he should have the last word, you should always state your opinion and try to work out plans. If you think they are wrong tell them without fearing they might think that you are scum.
  • Take notes! For new players it can often be hard to remember everything. So make note of important things, for example if anybody acted suspicious in a post write down when and where he did that, so you can mention it later.
  • Don’t point out things that could harm the town! If someone slips and indicates that he is a certain role, don’t say it out loud. Maybe the Mafia did not get the hint yet. (Does not count if a Mafiosi slips.)
  • Coordinate your roles! After there has been a massclaim coordinate your Night Actions.
  • Communication is the key! As Mafia you have to talk to your fellow Mafiosis. Discuss who should be killed and tell them who you suspect to be an important role.
  • Always play townsided! Even as a Mafiosi you have to act like you are a townie. If you come up with a good startegy to win, the Town will often trust you, which can lead to your win in the end.
  • Lie! Don’t hesitate to counterclaim important town roles as Mafia , so they will not be confirmed.
  • Think a few steps ahead! Play it out like a game of chess. Look at what you can do and what your enemies can do. Think about what could happen and make plans accordingly.
  • Be creative! Even as a villager you can decide the fate of a game. Always try to work out plans and think. Don’t fear making mistakes. Everyone will make them once in a while. Even if your plan isn’t good, you will learn for the future and become a better player.

If you have any questions about mafia, don’t hesitate to ask me. I am here to help!
