Writing & Roleplaying Guild - Discord Discussion Night - January 2018 ULuy4YX

Missed the Discord Discussion Night on Friday, January 26, 2018 from 7PM to 9PM Central US time? Want to know what was talked about?

Read the notes here!

☿ Discussion question: What are you currently working on?
Discussion started out a bit on the slow side, but this is always a question that's relevant to our dear Guild! Participants mentioned that they had many plans, but hadn't made a lot of progress at the moment. Time management that actually incorporates all of your desired projects can be elusive! Others mentioned that their writing projects have stalled a bit, although they're hoping to get back into it with the new year!
Since the year is starting fresh, this is a good opportunity to make some goals! Goals don't need to be set at the beginning of the year—they are relevant at any time that you choose to hold yourself accountable, but there tends to be an allure to starting a new year with fancy-fresh goals. We talked about how well we've done with past goals, and that brings up an important point: failure to achieve a goal doesn't mean you should stop setting them! It can be hard to get things done exactly the way you wanted to complete it, but there's no penalty for trying again!

☿ Discussion question: What does everyone do to inspire yourselves when you run into a road block?
Writer's block can impact anyone at any time! We had a lot of great ideas! So many that it makes sense to start a thread to collect the best ideas!
• Talk to someone else about your project
• Listen to music that reminds you of the writing
• Re-read sections that you've written before which you have positive feelings about
• Take a break so you can approach with renewed energy
• Read other stories to get new ideas
• Re-read reviews of your work to remind yourself of perceived strengths/weaknesses
• Search online to find other ways people approached your plot conundrum
Another great idea from this discussion was to create a trophy cabinet: a collection of snippets from your own work that you enjoyed and feel proud of, so that you can easily re-read them later! Here are some examples using this concept from the one who introduced it to us, Sailor Uranus: Writing Contest Entries & One-Shot Drabbles!
Everyone was reminded that they are welcome to use the Discord channel if they need someone to talk to about their writing project! It can really help to muse over your current block or try to flesh out some rough ideas! It can be intimidating to start a discussion in the channel, but please feel free to give it a try! That's what it's there for! You are also welcome to do so in the Writer's Lounge!

☿ Guild feedback: Is there still interest in a Fellowship program, something to match up writing buddies?
At the moment, most the Guild members present at this Discussion Night didn't think they'd be particularly active in a program like this. It was suggested to instead have a time period dedicated to helping out other Guild members on a more free-form basis, without being assigned to a partner. Until there is more interest, Sailor Mercury will not implement a formal one-on-one Fellowship program, but will seek to provide opportunities to interact in a group setting.

☿ Guild feedback: What type of Contests is everyone interested in? Any other feedback on Contests? Despite a request for more Contests in the previous Discussion Night, there have been no entries in contests ran since that point!
Suggestions included changing the format of Contests to add more structure. A few ideas included contests for haiku, limericks, or other short-form poetry; quote, phrase, or setting prompts; shorter submissions (three-sentences, 100 words, etc.); writing based on songs; and ideas that incorporate more roleplaying. There was also mention of including a feedback system, requiring that those who vote provide a bit of feedback that can be anonymously sent to the submission authors.
Due to interest in song-related ideas (such as a contest where a playlist has been arranged and submissions can incorporate inspiration from one or all songs) it was suggested that we collect inspirational songs in a thread!
Have an idea for a Contest (or Game or Challenge?)—submit it here! Or send a message to Sailor Mercury!

☿ Guild announcements: February activities to look forward to!
• Discuss how you use music to support your writing!
• Submit a topic for Discussion Nights!

Activities
• Contest
• Game
• Challenge

☿ Guild reminders: Don't forget about activities and feedback!
• Don't forget that you can always reach out to Sailor Mercury with comments and suggestions for the Guild!
• Want to see a particular Contest, Challenge, or Game? Have a suggestion?
Please take a moment to provide Contests, Challenges, and Games Feedback!
• Expect changes to the Fellowship Program in future months!
