Advanced Character Profile

Character Name: Flosshilde
Gender: Female
Age: Unknown and unknowable
Species: Rhinemaiden
Universe: Original Fantasy - City of Shadows
Canon or Original: Somewhat original, heavily inspired by Wagner's Rhinemaidens from the opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen

Appearance: Her height and weight are average, yet Flosshilde seems to carry it with a grace and elegance that makes it hard for any person to properly recall exactly how tall she was or the particulars of her figure. They remember her only as a pretty and human-looking woman. Even her apparent physical age is impossible to place: Could she be 18? Or perhaps 23? Maybe in her mid-thirties? No one can say for certain. Her movements always resemble the fluidity of movement through water, even when she is not submerged.

She has two sisters, Woglinde and Wellgunde, to whom she is completely identical. There are no characteristics that set any of the women apart.

Her eyes are a blue-green hue that fluctuates in colour and intensity. Sometimes they are bright and laughing, other times dark and stormy. Her long wavy hair, which seems to float around her, is golden-brown colour flecks of truer gold whenever sunlight hits it. It was much brighter and more golden long ago, before the precious treasure of her guardianship was stolen. Her skin is an even, pale shade.

Flosshilde and her sisters prefer to be nude. When they must be clothed, they opt for lightweight non-constructing outfits selections that barely conceal their nudity. They sometimes decorate themselves with jewelry and other accessories of pearls, coral, flora, shells, and precious metals.

Image of the Rhinemaidens (Warning - Nudity):

Personality: Flosshilde is capricious, shallow-seeming, flirtatious, and attention-seeking. Her emotions change constantly, wavering between all of the extremes and every stage in-between. She and her sisters can be very frustrating to deal with because they never seem to take anything seriously; life and everything within it is just a plaything's game for them. They don't seem to conceptually understand "time" or "making a living", and they often mock and tease creatures bound by those constraints. They don't actually consider themselves to be "better" than other creatures, but they lack compassion and sympathy that would soften their interactions with others. They love to act innocently provocative, taking advantage of their pretty looks, but never engage in any romantic interactions in a meaningful way. Again, it is just a game. Despite their bothersome tendencies, the Rhinemaidens are typically in good spirits. They are easily mollified when offended or sulky.

It is only when the topic of their missing treasure comes up that they seem otherwise. They weep over the lost Rhinegold on a daily basis, only revealing the depths of their mourning in those moments. The protection of that power was their sole purpose—without it, they are lost. They cover up their sorrow as best they can, but it is never far from their minds. Until the Rhinegold is returned, they cannot know peace. When this topic is brought up the normally fluttering maidens turn solemn, sometimes even providing cryptic advice or warnings.

Any Unique Abilities/Skills:

Active:

  • Enhanced Swimming: Rhinemaidens are extremely skilled swimmers and cannot drown. They do not need to worry about breathing. They are capable of gliding through air in a similar fashion, but frequently opt not to do so (it unsettles others) unless they are being particularly mischievous. They can move extremely quickly with this method of movement.
  • Golden Shimmer: With concentration, the Rhinemaidens can detect the faint aura of the missing Rhinegold. This works as a "getting warmer" very general idea of the basic direction they should travel. This was what led them to Raven's Hollow.
  • Trickery: With a hint of magic, all sorts of things can be made more interesting than they might otherwise be. Flosshilde and her sisters are able to use bits of glamour and other illusions to amuse themselves and deceive others. They typically do things like: change someone's hat to have the appearance of a large cake, disguise a huge puddle so that someone steps in it, make the door of a house appear to have moved, etc. They cannot harm others with this or do much more than be generally annoying. Unfortunately for others, they really enjoy being annoying.

Passive:

  • Enrapturing Beauty: Flosshilde and her sisters lovely—a kind of beauty that catches attention and hearts with just a glance. The intensity of someone's temporary infatuation with the women depends on physical proximity. The closer they are, the more beautiful and enchanting the maidens are. With distance, those emotions fade. It is not only their appearances that are beautiful, but also their voices and mannerisms.
  • Ageless: Flosshilde and her sisters operate outside the boundaries of age and years.

Weapons/Magical Items:
Rhinegold: Rhinemaidens are guardians of a mysterious treasure, known as Rhinegold, which lies hidden within the depths of strange waters. It can only be found when the light of the sun reflects through the water, illuminating it, and can only be possessed by someone who has renounced love. This treasure contains the total of magic from a pact of ancient entities, bestowing measureless power to anyone who can craft a ring from it. The final member of the group that empowered the Rhinegold is the same being who created the Rhinemaidens to guard it. To the deep sorrow of the Rhinemaidens, the gold was stolen. They mourn its loss even now.

History: Flosshilde and her sisters were conjured from the foam on the waves of the deep water that concealed the Rhinegold. They were never babes, children, or adolescents; the women emerged as adults, possessing the necessarily knowledge and traits. Their creator, "Father", gave them their sacred task before quietly settling into a coma-like deep sleep. They frolicked in the water for some ages after, with only the purpose of passing the time while the Rhinegold lay undisturbed. When the sunlight cut through the waters to illuminate the treasure, the three nymphs would sing praises while bathing in the golden light. It soaked into their beings, shining in their very hair.

Sometimes men or women would come near: sometimes lured by tales of the Rhinegold; other times simply wandering by. The Rhinemaidens loved these moments the best, for they teased and taunted the poor creatures besotted with their looks. After all, the Rhinegold could only be taken by someone who had forsaken love—but if the maidens attracted those people's attention, was that not love in some way? Some called them cruel; others bemoaned them as heartless. Flosshilde and her sisters did not mind either criticism. The treasure remained safe.

Until the day that it was no longer safe. When that day came, Flosshilde, Woglinde, and Wellgunde were powerless to stop the force that stripped the precious Rhinegold from the waters. Not only did it easily overpower them, but their memories of the theft were altered as well. They know that the entity that left with the treasure learned the secret, renounced all love, and took the Rhinegold despite their struggles—but that is all. They awoke in the now-darkened waters, confirmed that the treasure was missing, and wept. Since that moment they have been trying to find it. The Rhinegold or a hero to reclaim it are exactly what the sisters require.

They moved to Raven's Hollow very recently, having discovered this mysterious place while on their mournful quest. The trio took up residence in the river that flows through the town and the pond sheltered in the forest. They hope to use this as a base of operations as they continue to seek out the missing treasure. Now that they live among other creatures, their desire to cause shenanigans is more intense than it had been. It helps distract them from their sorrow. The other inhabitants of the town do not really enjoy this.

So far, the Rhinemaidens have refused to take sides or make guesses related to the disappearances. In fact, they don't really seem to understand the severity of the situation at all.

Other Noteworthy Facts: Flosshilde has two sisters, Woglinde and Wellgunde, who are indistinguishable from her. The trio are often together, but even when they are apart it is impossible to tell which is which.

Universe Specific Information: The town of Raven's Hollow is not your ordinary city. It is filled with supernatural creatures; from werewolves to sirens, from angels to demons, from the ones haunting the humans' nightmares to the most beautiful dreams. It is one of the last refugees left for these creatures, which were quickly becoming extinct after being hunted by humans in various places out of fear that they would assert their superiority otherwise with their magical powers and abilities.

Species Information: Rhinemaidens were created as guardians for the mysterious Rhinegold by an entity they refer to only as "Father". They are women as capricious and eternal as the waters of the world. They are far from human, requiring nothing Earthly to sustain their existence. Their primary purpose is to guard the Rhinegold, keeping it safe from those who wish to obtain its power. They are beautiful and flirtatious to serve as distractions that will direct attention away from the treasure. They have very few powers besides distraction and are highly weakened if they are separated. With the gold they were designed to guard now stolen, they are now somewhat aimless in purpose, mourning until the return of their missing treasure.

Storyline Specific Information:
City of Shadows: Recently, a new unknown threat has appeared in Raven's Hollow. Some of the townspeople felt it when the new presence arrived. The more sensitive ones felt the ominous tingle of electricity in the air, others felt their dreams disturbed by a half-formed premonition. The seers knew an age of change was coming, but for the first time could not tell for sure what it was. As days went on, one by one the townspeople began to disappear, seemingly vanishing into thin air from various places. First, a fairy. Then, a warlock. After that, a vampire.

At first, the townspeople blamed each other. See, maintaining the peace between all the different clans and races in Raven's Hollow was no easy task, with some of them being natural-born enemies, and some who physically could not stand each other. But when the vanishings continued to take random creatures of all races, seemingly affecting all of them, they soon realized that this threat did not come from their own neighbors. It was something else entirely, perhaps something they had never encountered before. And if they would have any hope to fight it, they must, for the first time in their lives, learn to not only get along, but also work together.

RP Sample: Flosshilde's eyes opened slowly, the sights of her familiar home gradually shifting into focus. Something was wrong. She knew that immediately, although she didn't understand how she knew or what it meant. As she dragged herself up from the rocky floor of the riverbed, her head throbbed painfully. The maiden winced as she realized that it was not only her head that ailed her; her muscles ached as well. No visible bruises showed on her lovely skin, but she could feel the impact of them. Her first thought, as thoughts filtered back into her mind, was to her sisters.

She whirled around, panic overwhelming any pain, the deep eyes reflecting her turmoil.

"Wellgunde? Woglinde?" The normally-melodic voice instead projected a harsh staccato of fear.

"Flosshilde! Wellgunde!"

"Woglinde! Flosshilde!"

The identical voices echoed back, heralding the appearance of her sisters, frantically swimming towards her. The three woman gently collided, drifting forward: grasping hands, clutching shoulders, and pressing faces to chests. All three sensed the change in their beloved home. The water felt colder than it should. The sunlight above them provided only a fraction of illumination. The water glittered, but the light reflecting from it lacked that beautiful sheen. Their hair looked darker now—less lustrous.

They didn't need to ask each other to know that the worst had happened: the Rhinegold was gone.

Flosshilde didn't know if it was Wellgunde or Woglinde who began the lament, but she joined in almost without realizing. Perhaps they began at the same time. They were the same, after all. They were essential to each other. The maidens clung to each other in the watery depths, their tears indistinguishable from all that surrounded them.

"Weia! Waga! Weia! Weia! Waga! Wagala weia! Wallala weiala weia!"

The voices were heard beyond the surface, catching on the wind, so suddenly turned harsh and chill. Villagers in distant towns caught the faintest cry of it and bustled their children indoors. They shivered, sensing the ill omen that none could explain or place. Even the animals in the forest and those living within the waters understood that a terrible thing had happened, tucking themselves safely into burrows and dens. The loss of the Rhinegold was only the beginning, the first tipped domino in a chain of unpleasant events.
