Advanced Character Profile

Character Name: Alastair Malak (angel protector of mankind)
Gender: Male
Age: Unknown
Universe: City of Shadows
Canon or Original: Original

Appearance: Alastair physically changed from before, though it is hard to tell if it was by choice or if it was demanded of him. Perhaps did he even change because his personality softened, but needless to say that seeing him today wouldn't make others believe he once used to be among the most ruthless angels.

Of average height, Alastair doesn't seem extremely dangerous. He is all soft edges and bright smiles, his skin softly glowing of an inner light he doesn't bother to hide. He is an angel, he'll not let you forget what he is. Seemingly ageless, he doesn't appear too musuclar, having more the shape of an adolescent (despite being obviously an adult, even physically) than a grown man who trains every day. Frail, he has long legs, arms and fingers with no sharp angles but with a small maturity in his features that says he stopped being a child a long time ago.

His blonde and long hair is usually tied into a ponytail, his nose is just a bit pointed but neither too small or too big, his lips are pink and full, and his blue eyes neatly puts the final detail on the cliché portrait he makes of angels. It's possible to catch a spark of arrogance when observing him closely.

When out, his six wings are pure white.

Though he does sports the clothes shown in the pictures from time to time, he usually prefers to be the inspector he became when arriving at the town. As a law enforcement member, he wears black pants, a white shirt and a long navy blue coat.
Young Alastair:
Personality: You know those annoying cliché pictures of 100% pure and innocent angels? Well for better or for worst, Alastair is exactly like that. When you see him, he doesn't seem to have any flaws and maybe that's what the most unnerving about him. He's kind, he's soft, he's quiet, he breathes the heaven's light as its gospel and doesn't see fazed by anything around him. He seems to treat everyone as his equal, but also doesn't seem to understand when spoken badly of. Insults don't seem to register in his mind, whether he ignores them or doesn't comprehend it's an insult stays a mystery for most people. He always has a perfect smile on his lips, as if nothing in the world could actually bring harm to his mood, his happiness, his serenity. He also seems clumsy, adorably flailing about in a world he doesn't quite seem to understand entirely, as if God had let his most innocent angel out on the field without any proper training. He is frustratingly hard to get a rise of and most of the time calling him out if he insults people, mocks people or says things that are deemed out of character, he will most likely turns it against the one talking to him, using his words to make his every gestures innocent, his every words saint. He has no flaws. He is angelic perfection. Perfect soldier of Heaven, perfect angel of compassion.

He is the friend, the brother, the protector. He does what he can to protect the ones he loves and even protect the ones who don't love him. It is, as he says, his job. He doesn't need love to protect, he doesn't need love to love. He appears peaceful, unwilling to do harm. The angel doesn't walk with his sword and his eternally young features seem to hold the very secrets of an happy, worthy life. He seems like the one who would bring redemption and light to everyone around him.

He appears sometimes oblivious and in a way, it is true that Alastair never properly understood how the world actually works.

In all honesty, Alastair is tired, world-weary. Exhausted, really. He knows he has to feel grateful for the second chance, but he has trouble seeing it as a second chance and not as a punishment. He knows how he acts drives people away and that's exactly why he does it. He knows the too bright smile, the too bright skin, the too gentle touches scare more than they heal and while he knows he is believable, he also knows it's the most comfortable he's been since years. Of course, deep inside, he still has the care he always carried as an angel, he loves humanity, but his neighbors are not human, his allegeance is for humans and where he cannot get attached, maybe it's the best place to protect and share Heaven's light.

The small hints of innocent sarcasm are the sugarcoated remnants of his cynism and though he believes, though he wants to believe, sometimes, he feels his very foundation trembles. He is among the oldest angels, nobody knows who came first anymore and he can't wait until this bloody world gets left behind and he can stand in Heaven's light again. Having it all for himself. No humans.

He can wait until He stops caring about them, so he doesn't have to care as well.

But right now, he's very content with tripping over a root and falling in the arms of someone, flailing about with gleeful innocence, making them forgive him too quickly and giving them a too bright smile.

Really.
Any Unique Abilities/Skills:
Angelic Blessing: He can offer his blessing to one or more beings, generally expanding their lifespan and assuring them a good health. He is linked to them. When they die, he will feel it.
Angelic Senses: He possesses a strength beyond that of humans, can hear prayers and can read minds.
Light Manipulation: He can use the light in any way he wants, would it be to chase the dark at night, hurt someone or protect. He can control its forms and its strength. Before, he used it more to fight and kill, now, he uses it for more benigne tasks (like not walking into a metal pole at night).

Healing: He can heal himself and others by taking their wounds and then healing himself.
Immortality: He cannot die of old age, though he can die from physical wounds, drowning, etc or he can choose to fade into pure energy into the world would he feel his existence as not needed anymore.

History: Nobody remembers when the ten first angels were created (or if they really were the first at all) and nobody remembers who came first among them. What Alastair does remember is that their mission, their purpose in the world was to keep the Light's Word pure and to watch over the Light's newly created world. Humans were not the only creatures living on Earth and the ten's angels were the ones that would uphold the Law.

What they could do? Anything, as long as it respected their purpose and as long as those suffering were in fact guilty.

Did they use their powers for their own gain? At some point, yes. No creatures given as much power on others usually use them without once straying from the path. At the beginning, celestial beings were more powerful than they are now, but those ten's mistakes made the Light rethink their design so Alastair and his siblings were given a more modest strength.

But that came much later in their existence.

Alastair was the most serious of his siblings, cold even with those he was the closest to, but he was loyal and followed his purpose without much of a thought. If someone was found guilty and needed to be dealt with, he would kill anything needed as if their lives didn't matter and for a while, they didn't. Criminals were criminals, and if death was to be given as punishment, he was more than glad to be the Sword that would purge the world of their existence. What should it matter than some of them had families, that others were actually innocent or that some were children?

Guilty? Dead.

It went like this for many many centuries before Alastair even thought that maybe he was using his purpose in the wrong way and maybe they were all tested. Maybe he didn't pass the test. Maybe he took what was given to him without even giving any importance to the message his creator wanted to give them, without giving any importance to other's life, to Earth's life.

Maybe he failed.
They all did.

When the order was given to kill one of his brethren, nobody asked. Alastair killed.

Centuries with all the freedom the Light could give. Years after the creation of thousands of other angels, the ten (now nine)'s punishment came. They were stripped of everything that made them different from the new angels (apart from their wings that they were left with as a reminder of their sins) and from killing machines they became Protectors of Mankind.

They were asked to learn how to be angels, pure ones, good ones, real ones. The new ones were better than them in every aspect, even if there indeed were some... fabrication defect from time to time. And Alastair discovered that they had been shown mercy for their stupidity. Where their powers were diluted to mere toys, sinners were cast out.

But again, he didn't think much of it, falling without seeing into the same pattern than before. Those who fell, surely they deserved it, surely their sins were so that mercy was not an option anymore.

However, he found a certain solace in being forced out of his original purpose, learning to love humans, to love Earth's creatures as he was always supposed to. The cold facade melted and though he stayed serious, he came to appreciate life, to respect it and his right to bless others finally came to use. Nobody was worthy before, but now he could see those who were.

So he blessed his favorites, revelled in their good life and accompanied them to their last rest with a certain pride.

The new purpose didn't bother him much until time passed and time taught. It taught him how annoying mortality was. Even though his blessing allowed those he blessed to live longer than a normal creature, they all ended up dying. Alastair understood quickly that if he could have some sort of benevolent affection for them, he should never feel beyond that. He learned that particular lesson probably too late.

One day, a child was born, one Alastair felt calling for him (as it happened when angels with the power to bless found a protégé) and he blessed the new soul with a fond smile brightening the coldness of his features. He left, only knowing what was happening to his protégé through the bond he created. The boy had a happy childhood, with loving parents and plenty of friends. Alastair knew of course that the joy of childhood often faded when adolescence came, but he hoped for the best as he kept with his duties, protecting the weaks, answering prayers, chasing demons away, recolting pure souls that had died to guide them towards those who would bring them in the afterlife and then one day, the bond shifted.

It shifted to something bitter and alarmed (knowing from which protégé it came), he left what he was doing to go and see if his human needed guiding.

He fell into that trap. His protégé, fully aware of his existence, of the visits Alastair thought subtle (none of the others ever noticed him before), had made so he would reveal himself (even if under human features, his glow gone and his wings hidden). At first, he was reluctant, then was won over by the other. His visits became more numerous and he didn't hide then.

Alastair had friends, whether they be creatures, his own brethren or the younger siblings that came after him, but he alwyas had kept his distance with his human charges, them being fragile to an irritable point. Which probably explain why, out of all his protégé, it was this one his enemies targeted.

He felt trouble before he could even register what was happening and flew to him in a flurry of panicked wings.

When he landed, his protégé's death made his legs give in under him, the pain seemingly everlasting before finally he felt the man's soul leaving its body, forgiveness on the departed lips.

The killing machine came back for the last time that night and Alastair went into exile. He didn't cut his ties to the few remaining protégés who were still alive, but he kept himself from visiting them, from talking to them in their dreams and from ever taking in another protégé.

He wasn't a good angel.
He had known that for a while now.
He had been created flawed and he wondered why.

Raven Hollow was still young if not newly born when he arrived there. He made his own nest in it and became something that would protect him from boredom, but also that wouldn't force him to take back his sword. The fact there wasn't any human in it was a refreshing thing and maybe would he be able to just... forget and remake a life for himself.

He didn't quite expect for angels, demons and even a fallen angel to be part of the town, but oh well.
Maybe was it possible to still have fun then.
Other Noteworthy Facts:

  • Alastair has a sword, the Lightbringer, that he doesn't carry with him anymore. It's in his house, hidden from view in an everlasting patch of light in a corner of his room, but he doesn't use it. He sees himself as retired and thus he rarely brings his weapon with him.
  • His house is unnaturally bright in colors and light.

Universe Specific Information:
The town of Raven's Hollow is not your ordinary city. It is filled with supernatural creatures; from werewolves to sirens, from angels to demons, from the ones haunting the humans' nightmares to the most beautiful dreams. It is one of the last refugees left for these creatures, which were quickly becoming extinct after being hunted by humans in various places out of fear that they would assert their superiority otherwise with their magical powers and abilities.
Species Information: Alastair is among the oldest angels, could be the oldest or not, nobody knows. There are about 10 angels that were there at the very beginning and none of them remember who came first, who came last. All they know is that they were here long before another bunch of angels were created, ranking under them, but still as celestial as they. They were called the Leviathans.
Perhaps because of this, Alastair punishment never included falling from Grace.
But punishments there were.
He was one of Heaven's ten killing machines.
Demons, angels, humans, otherkins. None are forbidden for him to take the life of, unless he is wrong in their sins / crimes / orders.
Despite the fact he is not that anymore, he knows that if the Light demands and allows that he kills again, he will take up the sword without a thought.

  • He has six pure white wings and cannot be killed but by the means of another's angel sword.
  • Unforgivable Sins will make of him a fallen angel if he ever crosses the line.
  • Cursed objects can burn his skin (even if sometimes, the pain makes him laugh, it's still not comfortable).
  • He feels when the creatures he blessed die and feels their pain (though for him its more discomfort than real pain since humans and angels don't have the same resilience).
  • He cannot kill anymore. If he does he feels his victim's pain during their death on an angel level. He can, however, fight and defend himself.

Storyline Specific Information:
City of Shadows: Recently, a new unknown threat has appeared in Raven's Hollow. Some of the townspeople felt it when the new presence arrived. The more sensitive ones felt the ominous tingle of electricity in the air, others felt their dreams disturbed by a half-formed premonition. The seers knew an age of change was coming, but for the first time could not tell for sure what it was. As days went on, one by one the townspeople began to disappear, seemingly vanishing into thin air from various places. First, a fairy. Then, a warlock. After that, a vampire.

At first, the townspeople blamed each other. See, maintaining the peace between all the different clans and races in Raven's Hollow was no easy task, with some of them being natural-born enemies, and some who physically could not stand each other. But when the vanishings continued to take random creatures of all races, seemingly affecting all of them, they soon realized that this threat did not come from their own neighbors. It was something else entirely, perhaps something they had never encountered before. And if they would have any hope to fight it, they must, for the first time in their lives, learn to not only get along, but also work together.

RP Sample:
"My apologies, truly, I did not mean to do... oh!"

Alastair seemed contrite, his beautiful face falling with something again to a sympathetic sadness as he tripped over something and that something went crashing on the ground. Nothing broken, of course, but it was so rude of him. He replaced it quickly, noticing the uneasy stance of his interlocutor, but he didn't comment on it, his laugh bubbly and charming.

"And again! I think that will be all, what do you think? I have taken enough of your time, I do apologize again."

He slowly stepped back, trying not to trip over himself, skin softly glowing as he seemed pleased with how they wouldn't part in bad terms. He got out of the house and slowly hopping to his working station, evidence statched into its sterile bag. He entered the police station with a smile that probably was use to blind people once upon a time.

-Got it?
"Of course, dearie, why wouldn't I?" He sing-sang charmingly while going to the evidence room, satisfied with himself and ignoring the rather struck look he was given - though the other inspector ended up snapping out of it.
