Guerrilla Girls

Wikipedia wrote:
Guerrilla Girls are an anonymous group of feminist, female artists devoted to fighting sexism and racism within the art world. The group formed in New York City in 1985 with the mission of bringing gender and racial inequality in the fine arts into focus within the greater community. Members are known for the gorilla masks they wear to remain anonymous. They wear the masks to conceal their identity because they believe that their identity is not what matters as GG1 explains in an interview "...mainly, we wanted the focus to be on the issues, not on our personalities or our own work." Their identity is also hidden to protect themselves from the backlash of prominent individuals within the art community.

The Guerrilla Girls are a group that's known for being provocative and raucous. It can be hard to understand their purpose or their impact on the art world without understanding the climate of women's art at the time of their creation. In 1985, female artists were habitually denied entry into museums and exhibitions on the basis of being female.

"They said, 'This show can't include women.' Well, we just got mad. We got mad and we said, we're mad, we're not taking it anymore." - Faith Ringold

Women began to retaliate by picketing galas and exhibits, vocally protesting and banging on drums. When the Whitney Museum held their annual sculpture exhibition, which claimed to exclude women on the basis that there were no prevalent women sculptors, Dr. Lucy Lippard organized a protest and used a projector to project women's art onto the outside of the building at the opening of the show.

When Judy Chicago created a piece that contained echos of female anatomy, it was violently debated on the floor of Congress and barred from being shown in Washington D.C., an injustice that no male artist who used female nudes or images of the body had ever faced.

"We use facts, humor and outrageous visuals to expose sexism, racism and corruption in politics, art, film and pop culture." - Guerrilla Girls

In a climate of exclusion from the big galleries, you can better understand why the Guerrilla Girls would start creating politically charged, in-your-face feminist art. The group still operates today and you can see an excellent timeline of their work on their website.

For more information about women's art from the 1970's to the present, I recommend the documentary !Women Art Revolution (W. A. R.) by Lynn Hershman Leeson.
