Plot Summary: While helping the solar system senshi ridding nearby planets of Chaos, Titania and Oberon went on a mission together to a desolate planet that seemed to be devoid of life save for one lone palace, much like the maze planet that had swallowed an entire team for five whole months. This planet turned out to be yet another Chaos trap. The two of them detected a chaotic presence from one of the chambers of the palace. However, when they stepped inside, the room began to seal itself completely while the whole building began to burn.

As they searched for a way out, a shadowy figure appeared and taunted them, saying that if one of them offered their Sailor Crystal, the other could leave, and that if they tried to kill him, both would die anyway, as only those with powers of darkness could pass through the room. Hence, he was the only one who could open the door for one of them. As they fought over who should stay and whether they should bargain with the chaotic entity at all, they soon realized that whether they liked it or not, only one thing was for certain.

Only one of them would walk out of there alive.

Details on any necessary information: This is an AU story taking place during the second Sailor Wars in the Crystal Tokyo era. It is not canon. We just want to explore the angst

< I sense the presence of chaotic energy over here,> Titania nodded at the chamber at the end of the corridor. The abandoned palace loomed above them, with tall ceilings and foreboding dark stone walls everywhere, a little bit like a maze inside. She didn’t like this at all. It felt like a trap. Why would Chaos be residing in a place where no one lived?

Maybe they should have brought more back-up, but having seen other missions from Oberon’s mind link, Titania honestly didn’t have much confidence in the other senshi in the solar system or beyond. They were all children, after all, who were more interested in bickering or flirting or simply sabotaging their mission with their own incompetence. Two capable people were better than a dozen hapless children, in her opinion. Two capable people who knew each other so well they did not even need to speak were even better.

And no matter what Chaos was doing here, they still had to get rid of it. Just because no one appeared to be living here didn’t mean they ought to leave it alone. Centuries of fighting the dark forces had made her more attuned to the signature energy, able to recognize it from a considerable distance. It was unmistakably Chaos, and they were here to cleanse it.

Titania stepped toward the room and carefully opened the door, using it as a shield in front of her in case something were to shoot out from beyond. When nothing happened, she carefully stepped inside.

There appeared to be only darkness in there. Her eyes, usually able to see past any darkness, could not discern anything. She took one step slowly into the room and held her breath.

Oberon flew behind her, mind and body ready for a fight. He knew they would undoubtedly come upon a trap. Chaos worked in wretched ways, but Titania and him fought together more than once and he trusted his swords way more when she was there.

< It is even stronger here than it was earlier. Be careful. >

He thought about offering her to call to their aid some warriors he knew but he could guess her thoughts and shared her opinions: teamwork was good only if those fighting together could do so in a harmony Oberon rarely saw in other groups he'd been in.

He knew Titania since his childhood, a time so long ago it felt almost as if unreal and yet, they had lived thousands upon thousands of years together, watching solar systems being born and die. They watched as the universe went through its ups and downs, aged as Chaos became stronger every day.

They weren't a people that loved to get mixed into other's conflicts, but Oberon couldn't ignore what was happening outside of their planet.

He followed inside, blades in both hands, feet landing onto the floor.

He could feel the chaotic energy all around them. Enough so that something in him bristled and stirred. No one could be hurt on this planet as it was empty, but if they left it there, it could grow, evolve and be the doom of an inhabited place this time.

Darkness.

One his heightened senses couldn't unveil. He felt Titania's breath stopping his own.

But despite the pure darkness swallowing their forms, he couldn't sense anything else, nor hear or see. He blinked, his smaller body finding Titania's personal space, keeping her in his sensory reach.

< Sometimes, the seed is not sentient... but this is too easy. >

Something was really wrong. The room, for all she could see, seemed to contain nothing at all. No clear source of the chaotic energy even as she felt it suffocating her like a blanket of darkness. She was normally a friend of darkness, but not this kind. This was… poisonous and filled with decay.

< I can’t see anything, > Her hand automatically reached out to his, seeking comfort and support. She normally didn’t feel compelled to do this in battle—she didn’t get scared, and she was always confident of both of their abilities. Having him in her head did not distract her because she trusted they both could handle themselves, but something about this time seemed different. Call it a premonition or a feeling, but she suddenly felt as if they had made a big mistake. She was about to say to him that they should get out when the door slammed behind them.

She summoned fire on her free hand to light up the room and gasped. The door had completely vanished. Now there was only a smooth wall where it once stood. Titania moved forward and ran her hand along it, finding no crack or even the slightest hint that once there had been an opening there. A quick look around the small square room showed more of the same. Four smooth walls. One smooth roof. One smooth floor. No way out.

Annoyed, she attempted to throw her fire to the wall with all her might, but it didn’t so much get scorched. In fact, it almost seemed as if her flames had been simply absorbed into it. Her heartbeat picked up in alarm as the idea that they would be trapped here forever seared her mind.

< It’s a trap. What do we do? >

And then entirely different flames that most certainly did not come from her began to erupt along the walls on their own.

< I did not do that. >

They were literally trapped in a burning building with no way out.

Not entirely true.

The voice came from their mind alright, but the slow drawl and the cold softness of the tone clearly didn't belong to Oberon's inner voice. From where it came, it wouldn't be easily known for Heylel kept himself outside of the locked room, outside of the box these two immortals were enclosed in. Watching, waiting, perhaps playing, just a bit. There were no orders beyond 'get rid of any nuisance', so from time to time, Heylel would get... creative.

A small box.

Containing two creatures who had soared through the immensity of the universe so many times before.

Heylel could appreciate the irony.

Chaos had been unpleased by the flock of sailor soldiers all around the Milky Way and beyond, standing up to destroy every part of his existence. Of course, such a holy mission was a foolish one for darkness was needed if light was to exist, as much as light had to be an inconvenient presence for darkness to prevail.

Without happiness, despair couldn't exist.

Even if from where he stood, those two Sailor Soldiers were the evil, the corruption, the wrong to everything beautiful in this universe.

Maybe it was telling of how lost he was when a dark satisfaction gripped him as the taller soldier sought for the smaller's hand. What a charming sentiment. What more poetic than breaking such an old bond? How low could the surviving party descend? How long would corruption need before striking down a grieving prey?

There is a way out, of course. And who knows, maybe will you even be able to destroy what you were after.

A certain humor poured into his soft tone and if Heylel could no longer smile at the world, his voice carried it perfectly.

I am known to be merciful.

And to appreciate watching this rotten world burn.

His hand closed around Titania in a reflex that was foreign to both of them, one of the blades disappearing to make place for her. Together, they were unstoppable. A storm that took the universe's challenge heads on, a destructive force that would have, if used for evil, been a whole new plague.

A random, merciless whisper in his mind noticed how rarely his hand had held Titania's like this.
How he should have done so more.

His fingers clenched around hers defensively.

He felt her about to speak, but the door suddenly slamming shut behind them interrupted her thought and his eyes followed the light she cast right away. No door. A smooth and naked surface with no hint that there a door was ever there and his heart sank.

He knew it could have been a trap, it was Chaos they were chasing, but there was no one to even fight inside the room, so why? And where...

The flames summoned a deeply ingrained tension in every muscle of his body, wings shuddering as devastation spread to the walls. He barely held himself from jerking backward, his own heart synchronizing itself with Titania's alarmed heartrate. He honestly thought they would simply burn alive in there until a voice invaded his mind, their minds and the fae frowned.

< How is he... >

An icy feeling coursed through his veins.

Oberon Shields!

Came the prayer.

Forcefields surrounded them as he instinctively felt the need to protect them both from whatever, whoever it was.

"Show yourself!"

He commanded with more force than he had in centuries.

Annoyance and fear could do wonders.

He didn't dwell on the meaning of the voice's words. He didn't care. They couldn't fight against an invisible enemy, but if the man was to appear, they would simply show him they weren't toys. Because that was clear enough.

His tone treated them as playthings, nothing more.

< Be ready. >

Titania’s body jolted at the sound of someone else’s voice in her mind that was not Oberon’s. It felt like such an intrusion, sending an unpleasant creeping sensation up her spine. The voice felt evil, and so she immediately did not trust whatever it said.

She scoffed, almost full out laughed as it claimed to be merciful. Well, I won’t be.

She didn’t know if it could hear her, too, but it probably could.

Oberon’s shields formed around them, but it could not last forever. If they didn’t find the foe and put out the fire soon…

< I’m always ready. >

She looked around carefully, trying not to let the heat of the flames bother her. She was more heat-resistant than her husband, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t burn alive.

“Come out and play. You sound like you want to.”
