| ~~~Croatian Glagolitic Script~~~ In this thread you will be decoding some words to learn more about Croatian Glagolitic Script! Before you begin:1. All of the words being decoded are already in English, the letters were simply switched from Latin to their Glagolitic equivalent. I have provided a simplified decoding table below to help you along the way. 2. Because Croatian Glagolitic script does not contain the letters Q, W, X, or Y, I have given you a free Y for (10.). Please treat it as part of the word you are decoding. 3. If you see two of the same number, it just means that it's the same word. Prizes:If you take the time to decode at least 10 words, you will earn a special bumper! However, if you decode ALL 21 words, then you will earn a special signature in addition to the bumper! Once you have decoded the words, DO NOT POST THEM HERE, please PM them to me to claim your participation bumper and/or signature!
Decoding Table Glagolitic script is the (1.) known (2.) alphabet. Most scholars believe that the alphabet was created by the Byzantine (3.) St. Cyril toward the end of the (4.) century.
The Croatian Glagolitic script has been around for more than one thousand years, and is still used to this very day in some of the nation's (5.). It became part of the Croatian culture when Pope (6.) IV gave (7.) Philip of Senj special permission in 1248 for all Croatian lands to use their own (8.) language and (9.) of the Glagolitic script in (10.) This is interesting because Croatia was the only place in Europe with such a (11.): all other nations under the teachings of the Catholic Church had to use (12.) at the time.
The Bašćanska ploča (Baška (13.)) is the earliest known (13.), dated to the 11th century which was four centuries before America was discovered by Christopher Columbus. It contains 400 Glagolitic characters and has the phrase “(14.), the Croatian (15.)” carved into it, making it the oldest known document written in the Croatian** language that mentions Croatia. It should be noted that very few European nations have extensively written monuments in a (16.) language, let alone their own, as early as the 11th century; and that Glagolitic inscriptions in stone have never been found outside of Croatia. **The Croatian here displays some characteristics of Old Church-Slavonic. Aside from the sacral literature created for the church, there are (17.) of other documents written in Croatian Glagolitic script, suggesting that it was also used for administrative purposes and in (18.) communication.
One of the earliest and most important Croatian legal documents of medieval Europe is known as The (19.) Code, written in the Glagolitic alphabet in 1288. The (19.) Code was very different from Roman law because it introduced the use of witnesses; determined the (20.) protection and integrity of women; and did not allow (21.) during legal proceedings.
