Ningyo - Mood Music
She pulled on the oars, her muscles screaming in protest, the sweat on her brow beading and rolling down her face. Her breath came in painful gasps, the sea air attacking her tongue and throat with every determined drag of air into her lungs. The clouds overhead gathered dark and heavy overhead, but she would not be deterred – she would not stop. She gritted her teeth and pulled on, the oars pushing the ocean back to propel her forward, towards her trap. She glanced behind her and adjusted her strides, eyeing the group of rocks that were only visible during low tide and aiming towards them. The shore beyond was growing farther away, the smoke from the fire she had set rose into the sky to be lost in the grey storm gathering, and her heart raced in fear barely contained by the power of her will alone. Catching a Ningyo will bring storms and misfortune. She wasn’t so far from the shore; any storm that was summoned would push her back in, not take her out farther – she could make it back, even if she didn’t know how to swim. A ningyo washed up onto the shore is an omen for war or calamity – but which calls the other is unknown. The ningyo wouldn’t wash up on shore – it would be taken on shore in her boat – but even if what she did counted, they were alreadyat war. If it caused calamity she’d be miles away by the time it struck. Miles away and alive and forever young, unable to be hurt or to die until she was too old to care anymore. She would eat its flesh and run away from the village she had escaped, run away from her prefecture, her emperor, this land. Those who eat the pleasant-tasting flesh of a ningyo will attain remarkable longevity. The nose of her boat hit the rocks behind her and she released her oars, trusting they would stay in their lock, and fought to remain calm, taking deep, even breaths, staring back at the store and preparing herself for what she was about to do. What she needed to do. Ningyos look half-human, half-fish, and have a monkey’s mouth with small teeth like a fish, shining golden scales, and a quiet voice like a skylark or a flute. It’s not human, she thought to herself, It’s ningyo, not human. She shuddered, still panting, her hands in fists on her legs, her eyes focusing on the back of the boat, not the waves, not the shore, and not the rope tied to the rock beside her that disappeared beneath the dark water. It’s not human. … and men are out there, wiping out clans. They’ll find me and kill me to make sure I don’t come back, no matter what I say. I have to run. Her deep blue eyes shifted nervously to the water beside her, beneath where the rope disappeared. And having the powers of the ningyo would guarantee I can survive. Thunder crashed overhead, jolting her into action, the sound too similar to the houses cracking beneath the fires. She grabbed the blade and put it on the seat across from her, ready to use to end its life, and then leaned over the side, first her right, then her left hand grabbing the rope. She pulled, the boat moving in response to sit above the spot as she hauled her catch upward, her heart being faster as she realized that she had caught something, and that it could be the answer to her need. She reached farther into the water and heaved mightily, pulling as the nose of her boat crashed into the rock again, keeping almost steady as she saw a flash of something golden in the water beneath her. Thunder crashed again, loud and frightening, a warning to let things be, to free the ningyo and leave, but she couldn’t – she was too afraid to leave without it, and fear of what had been overpowered what could be. Hand over hand the rope pulled the load closer, the golden scales of what must have been the tail shimmering as though through seaweed. Finally the top of her net crested the water, and she gripped the netting between her fingers and threw her weight backwards, hauling her catch into the boat with her eyes closed. As the weight of the slippery mass hit the interior of her boat, the waves rocking everything back and forth violently, she grabbed the hilt of her blade and struggled to free her legs from the mass, her chest hurting with the stress on her heart, every nerve of hers twitching with anticipation and fear as she scrambled and kicked herself free. The noise that it made was terrifying at first, quiet and light but obviously startled and frightened; the sounds tugged at her emotions but she couldn’t let it go. It flailed as she finally freed herself from beneath it, huddling in the back of the boat, the blade in one hand, her eyes trying to find a place to strike to kill it – but as she looked for a vital spot she recognized so many similarities that the breath caught in her throat repeatedly, her chest heaving as she sobbed. Ningyo or not, it was half-human – what she had thought was seaweed was instead long hair, the color of the sea. As it cried out in fear it pushed parted the hair from its face so it could see, and it was not the monkey-mouth on a fishy-face she had been expecting, but instead a face so beautiful and so human that it nearly broke her heart with how perfect it was, and the sea-green eyes that looked at her in fear panic struck her to her soul. It was human. It had feelings. Her hand shook so terribly she dropped the knife, and in her failure to save even herself, she wrapped her arms about her chest, curled up pain, and gave in. “I’m sorry!” she screamed, “I’m sorry! I’m sorry!” she cried over and over, her words for the ningyo, for her family, for everyone she had left behind. Tears would not come, the dry sobs that wracked her body serving only to further her guilt rather than alleviate it. Frustrated at her inability to succeed even in crying, she stretched herself back out again, grabbed the knife one more time, and reached for the net holding the beautiful pale woman with the golden fish tail, and slashed through the rope, strand by strand, to create a hole. Sobs still escaping her, she tossed the knife into the back of her boat and reached beneath the sea creature and rolled her off the side, back to where she belonged, and then fell prone into the bottom of her boat as the rain began to fall. What would she do now? What could she do now? She didn’t want to die, and she could not kill to save herself. She was a coward. She might as well follow the ningyo back into the sea and drown – The boat rocked alarmingly and her eyes burst open, her hands and legs pushing against either side of the boat to steady herself as fear swelled again – she couldn’t swim, if her boat capsized she would drown – she didn’t want to die! Water dripped into the boat from above, heavier than the rain, and she looked up to see the beautiful ningyo looking down at her, her arms crossed on the side of the boat to support herself. “You have freed me; what are your wishes?” Wishes?! “I don’t want to eat you anymore, Ningyo! Go back to the depths and be free,” she muttered, looking away. “I am no ‘ningyo’,” she said calmly, her voice melodic as a flute, “I am Ceasg, maiden of the sea. You have freed me, so I will grant you three wishes. What do you wish for, daughter of the shore?” She wasn’t even a ningyo. If she had gone through with it she would have killed her and eaten her for nothing. She was a failure. “I only wish to be free of the war on the shore,” she said, her voice empty. Something warm and wet touched her cheek and she started from the suddenness of the gesture, looking up to see the Caesg looking down at her, her eyes mesmerizing. The hand that caressed her cheek had webbed fingers, but was otherwise like hers, and the touch was so comforting and gentle and so like everything she craved, as the creature removed it, she sat up to follow it. Soon they were staring at each other over the tipping boat, and the hand moved back to her cheek, and then the other to the other side of her face as the boat tipped even farther over, her weight leaning farther over the side, mesmerized by the beautiful eyes of the Caesg, their faces getting closer together… At the critical moment, just as the boat finally gave in and started to flip, the caesg brought the young woman’s face to her own and kissed her lips as she dragged her beneath the waves. And so her first wish was fulfilled. ……..
A year later, two caesg swam side by side through the depths; one had long hair the color of the sea and a tail of deepest gold, the other’s hair was short and blonde with a tail of shining silver. As they moved through the seaweed surrounding an underwater mountain of dark rocks and over the wreckage of a small boat, the blonde took the hand of the golden-tailed sea-maiden in her own, and kept swimming.
- Entry 2:
The monster she sought to slay had many names: The Great Wyrm of Emerald Peak. The Mountain’s Judge. The Verdant Lord. But its oldest name was Grünfeuer, a dragon more ancient than the civilization around it. The legends claimed it was bigger than a castle, tall enough to block out the sun as it loomed over its prey, and breathed out an inferno of flames that glowed a sickly green as it burned.
Yet here she was on that very mountain, a single mage against a force of nature. She used her carved wooden staff to help navigate the rocky path up to the pinnacle, her blue hooded cloak covering her face from the harsh sunlight. As she climbed higher and higher up, she could see sun bleached bones and half melted chain-mail littering the stones, remnants of past trespassers.
Many warriors, heroes, thieves, and magicians had attempted this feat before her, and none had survived. Emerald Peak was riddled with creatures that picked off the unsuspecting, so many failed to even reach the top. Eventually, people stopped attempting at all.
She didn’t have a choice in the matter.
And so she picked her way through the century old remains of the dead, the stench of brimstone filling the air.
It was nightfall when she was first attacked, sore all over and straining to see in the dying light. The snarling dire-wolf tore her cloak with its teeth, but she knocked it away with a panicked ball of energy. She followed it up with a slash of her hand, and a wave of magic finished the job. The sight made her sick, but she kept moving. There wasn’t time to be disgusted.
The stars were out when she first met the knight, whose longsword saved her from another of the mountain’s twisted inhabitants. Before she had even realized that a wyvern had been stalking her, the knight was already at her back, slicing it in two. She stumbled over the rocks in fear as she turned around, and stared as the moonlight shone off the knight’s pitch black armor, tattered red cape fluttering in the breeze. The stained blade slid back into its sheathe with barely a sound. The knight turned to face her, eyes invisible behind the slits in the sleek helmet.
The mage blinked when a gauntlet covered hand was held out to her.
“This mountain is not a place for children,” the knight said. She frowned under her hood and took the offered hand, allowing herself to be pulled to her feet.
“I’m not a child,” she answered, brushing her robes off. The knight’s head shook.
“Do as you wish, as long as you understand what you have at stake. But I advise you not to continue on while the sun is set. Not even I dare to climb in the dark.” She thought his tone was a little condescending, but maybe stopping for the night was a good idea. The mage scrambled to catch up with the other’s purposeful stride further up the mountain.
They were in a small alcove now, huddled around a sloppy but functional fire pit. She didn’t realize how cold she was until she was warming her hands over the flames, but she appreciated it anyway. The knight was silent, looming in another corner of their cave and poking at the fire with a stick as ate a piece of bread, the first food she stopped to have all day.
“Why are you up here?” she asked, breaking their silence. “I mean, if it’s okay if I ask. Are you some kind of guardian?” The knight’s laugh was muffled behind the helmet.
“No, I have my own reasons. I want to reach the peak.”
“So are you going to fight the”-
“The dragon? That’s my intention.” The mage looked down, fiddling with her cloak.
“Oh...So I guess that makes us rival,” she said. The knight shifted to look at her.
“You came here to kill Grünfeuer? You must be confident in your magic to face something like that alone.”
“More like desperate.” She snorted, staring into the flames now. “I’m not sure if that’s enough, but I’m going to try. I need its heart.” The knight hummed.
“When a beast as powerful as a dragon dies, it leaves an imprint of its soul behind. The old books call that the dragon’s heart, but do you believe it to be true? That kind of old magic is dangerous. Some say that it can do anything.” The mage nodded.
“That’s what I need,” she said. The look in her eyes kept the knight from questioning it any further.
“Fair enough.” The knight stood up and stretched, facing away from her. “I only needed the heart to prove that I did my duty, but if you kill it first, you can have it.”
“Really?” She had expected to have to fight over it, but was this a trick? The knight paused, and then turned to drop to one knee, head bowed.
“On my honor, milady.” The back of her neck burned at the title, but she smiled back.
“I’ll hold you to that.” She went to sleep that night curled up in a ball on the cave floor, the knight standing sentinel as the fire dwindled.
The next day, they traveled as a pair, the mage in the over-sized cloak dwarfed by the knight’s shadow. Even as the mountain grew more barren and even fouler creatures arose to be slain, she felt more confident than ever before. With her sorcery and the knight’s sword and shield, maybe this mission was not hopeless. Maybe she could return home, alive and victorious. Maybe.
It was the peak itself that broke her. It was a small, flat outcropping, and so high up that she struggled to draw breath at times. She almost stepped on a melted helm of a long dead paladin as she climbed the last few stones, and the knight’s eyes lingered on it before following her up. Beyond more skeletons and burnt ground, she saw no signs of life.
“Where...where is it?” Her voice was hoarse from disuse.
“It will be here soon, don’t let your guard down,” The knight’s sword was already out, and the scratched up shield was held at the ready. The clouds above them wavered, and then tore apart as a massive creature slipped through them.
It was impossible for any book to describe what she was seeing as it descended before her eyes. It was both a snake and a lion, an eagle and a deer, a creature of flesh and blood, but also a spirit.
She could only stare as it landed on its four paws, green scales reflecting the daylight as muscles shifted under them. Huge golden eyes looked straight through her, pupils slit. And then it spread its wings and shook the mountain with what she could only compare to a thousand screams at once, echoing over and over until it was one roaring sound.
This was Grünfeuer. The mage did not realize she had collapsed until the knight pulled her back off her knees.
“I..I can’t..” she began to say.
“But you must, just like I must,” the knight said. “We’ve made our choices.” And then the knight moved. The dragon took a step forward, and the mage watched in awe as they clashed. It was not a fight, but a dance.
The dragon’s stomach and throat scales glowed brighter before its maw opened, and emerald fire spilled out like lava from a crack in the earth. It roared, and a torrent of it filled the air. Her skin burned even from a distance, and the knight ducked behind the tower shield before the storm of heat bathed everything.
Even as the tattered cape burned away entirely, the knight charged forward to slash at the dragon’s underbelly. It screeched again, and the air crackled with lightning as they trades slashes and spurts of fire. Her eyes lit up as an idea came to her, and she held her staff out towards the sky.
The mage’s eyes squeezed shut as she chanted under her breath, tuning out the chaos around her. The air crackled as the wind kicked up, and when her eyes opened again, they were bright white. The clouds opened up to release a bolt of electric, and the dragon's body coiled and writhed when it struck. The knight took the chance she had made and flipped the longsword into a reverse grip before plunging it into the dragon’s chest.
The dragon roared and thrashed, and its whip of a tail slammed the knight in the breastplate. The mage stopped her spell when she heard the cry of pain, and saw the knight tumble to a stop.
“No!” She forgot about Grünfeuer, the dragon’s heart, and even herself as she ran to the knight. She ignored the blood seeping out from between the knight’s clothing, hoping it would somehow disappear.
The knight coughed and chuckled when she came into view, already sitting up against a boulder.
“It seems that you’ve won.”
“Forget about that!” she said. “Are you going to be”-
“Go finish the job, or it’s all for nothing.” The knight was struggling to inhale.. “Take its heart and have your wish. You’ve earned it.” The mage’s breath hitched.
“I didn’t earn anything, without you, I…” The knight’s arms twitched, and then moved towards the helmet.
“I knew I wasn’t going to live before I started my climb.” The black helm clattered on the rocks, and the knight’s long hair spilled out as she fought to keep her eyes open. “So don’t you dare cry over me. I was going to die for honor, but you gave me a purpose.” Their eyes met, and the knight wiped the mage’s cheek off with her thumb. “Make sure one of us comes back, okay?”
The mage stood up and wiped the rest of her own tears away, and then nodded. The knight smiled at her, and the mage did her best to keep her grasp on the feeling it brought her. She turned away, burning the knight’s face into her memory.
Staff forgotten, she walked towards the still thrashing and bellowing dragon. Her eyes burned, but she didn’t have any tears left to cry from the heat and the sulfur stench. She raised a hand, and the sky’s fury fell upon the dragon again. The lighting struck the knight’s sword, still stuck in its chest, and Grünfeuer’s eyes lost their fury.
It seemed to disappear before the mage’s eyes as it fell, the life draining out of it like water from a brook. The Great Wyrm of Emerald Peak, The Mountain’s Judge, The Verdant Lord, was now fading like a banished ghost.
The mage reached the corpse just as it turned to dust in the wind, and in its place was a bright green flame. The Dragon’s Heart.
She touched it, but it did not burn her. And with dead eyes, she picked it up and brought it to her chest. Her entire body felt like it was ablaze, but there was no pain, only power beyond her imagination. She could feel it inside her now, like her own heartbeat.
And as the mage, now much more than that, turned to walk back down the mountain, she picked up the abandoned knight’s sword as well. She stopped at the knight’s corpse, her face peaceful in eternal slumber, and jabbed the sword into the soil in front of it.
She had climbed the mountain for her mother’s health, and yet… could she not do more? The mage knelt in front of the knight’s body and touched her chest with a hand wreathed in green embers. The knight stirred, and then bright glowing green eyes opened once more.

| Thanks everyone! JTC, YOURS WAS GREAT!!! I liked the world it hinted at, especially the unexplained power of the Dragon Heart and why each character wanted it (I mean we know why the knight wanted it, but the mage was only hinted and I'm just what did you need it for before you decided to use it to resurrect the Knight? Is it a one-time-use only thing? Did it actually bring them back to life or are they like a zombie puppetted by the Dragon's spirit which now works for you?! it makes me think and I like that is what I'm saying XD) and about number, I'm not sure; if we're counting only Guild Contest wins this would be considered my first win of the three I've entered! but we've gone and folded all writing contests into here so that would make my fourteenth overall? I'm good with whatever system you want to decide, whether this starts it from scratch or only previous guild contests count and every contest counts from now on or whatever XD All in your hands, Writing Contest Counselor! |

| Congrats on that well deserved win, Kyra! You used such a lesser known mythical creature for yours and I was really interested in what was going on because of it. And the dialogue and internal thoughts were so strong! I'd like to reach that level of smoothness in my own writing. I'm happy you guys liked mine even though I was a bit vague at times. |
