| Subject: How to Install an Adblocker (Optional) 20th January 2018, 4:42 pm | |
| Please note we've discovered things on Ustream have changed a bit: Using Firefox (or Chrome?) WITHOUT an adblocker turned on is preferable!
The webpage itself seems safe without it. You may still see video ads in the stream but they are relatively skippable. I've left the information below purely for interest for now, as many sites are much more usable with an adblocker installed, making your browsing experience more enjoyable~.Below is some information on the most popular adblocker extension, Adblock Plus. Feel free to PM me any additional questions, but do consider going over the information they have on their website first for a better understanding. - A Quick FAQ:
What does an adblocker do? Its primary purpose is to remove all intrusive advertisements from your browsing experience: YouTube video ads, Facebook ads, banners, pop-ups, pop-unders, background ads etc. It gives you full control over which ones to block and which to allow once you've installed the extension.
Is an adblocker legal? This is no longer as much of a grey area: A group of publishers in Hamburg, Germany was so upset by the use of adblocker potentially cutting into their advertising revenue that they took Adblock Plus to court. After a four-month trial, the regional court in Hamburg ruled that ad blocking is, in fact, perfectly legal.
Is Adblock Plus safe? Despite its need to access a lot of your browsing information (not personal/user information) in order to function, at the moment the company has demonstrated itself to be trustworthy. However, you should never grant any application or extension permissions that you feel uncomfortable with. Installing it is up to you and not at all necessary to view the streams on Ustream. To make you feel more at ease, do consider reading through their privacy policy.
Does Adblock Plus really block ALL ads? Adblock Plus comes preloaded with a filter that allows some ads to be shown. That white list is turned on by default, so users must manually opt out if they don't want to see any ads at all. The ads on the whitelist come from companies and organizations that Adblock Plus calls "strategic partners." They are all manually approved by ABP and must meet ABP's acceptable ads criteria. Again, you can turn these off at any time.
Is Adblock Plus free? Yes. You can always donate any amount - big or small - if you would like to, but there's no pressure. They make most of their revenue from whitelist partnerships.
Is Adblock Plus available for my browser? Adblock is available for all the top browsers plus a few others. It automatically detects which one you have and gives the appropriate installation link on their front page here: https://adblockplus.org/en/
Is Adblock Plus the only option for blocking ads? Nope! You can always shop around for other options. A quick search gave me a good comparison [HERE].
Happy Browsing! |
