Outside, the streets were as still and dark as the inside of the strange little shop. Only the wind and the creatures of the night continued their endless activity. The small shop with its wooden shelves sat empty. No trinkets glittered in the windows to tempt passers-by. No aged shopkeeper stood within. All was hushed and calm.
And then, a faint glow sparkled within the silent shop.
The brilliant light unfurled as it had once before, arranging itself into the shape seen once before at this location. The tall woman glimmered like the far reaches of space, her elegant form filled with the cosmic glow of distant stars and galaxies. The masses of long hair spilled from her like the halo of plasma. The dark eyes, deep as the void and just as cold, looked at the Crone.
Although she spoke no words, the tension in the room mounted with the woman's sudden appearance. They both knew what remained unspoken. The mysterious woman waited for the old one's response. |

The Crone stared right back, her eyes meeting the challenging stare stubbornly. In silence they stood watching one another, though the gravity of the younger began to overwhelm that of the older. Finally the crone threw her hands up in annoyance, "Fine!" She turned around and pulled out a pair of gauntlets and tossed them onto the counter as she put a shriveled old hand on her hips, "Fine, she can keep them! But don't tell anyone I haven't done anything for you." She shook her free knobbley old finger at the younger woman a few times to drive her point home, and then continued to mutter in a crotchety tone as she picked up the coinage that had appeared on her counter and tucked the gauntlets into her purse. She then ignored the cosmic mother, making a show of busying herself with nothing until the presence had left.
