German Basic Sentences PQxBJuC

Ever since I joined GC, I noticed how a few members were using the word "über" - or a bit more Americanized: "uber". Did you know that this is a German word? Translated it would be "above" or "about". Though, the way you use it, it would rather be "above".

Anyway, would you have thought that you're speaking German by saying this word? No? Well, but you do! And you know what? I even have a few more German words and sentences for you!

~bring dat german words in da society~

The words/sentences I italicized are those who are more common in the spoken language

Hello! - Hallo! // Guten Tag! (more formal) // Tag (auch)! (informal)// Hi na! (informal)
Good morning! - (Guten) Morgen!
Good afternoon! - Guten Nachmittag! (no one says that actually xD)
Good evening! - Guten Abend! // shortened (and informal): N'abend!
Good night! - Gute Nacht!
See you! - Auf Wiedersehen! // Tschüß! // Ciao! // Bis dann!
How are you? - Wie geht es dir? // shortened: Wie geht's (dir)?
I'm good! - Mir geht es gut! // shortened: Mir geht's gut!
I'm not so good! - Mir geht es nicht so gut! // Mir geht's nicht so (gut)!
Happy Birthday! - Happy Birthday! // Alles Gute (zum Geburtstag)!
I speak a little bit of German. - Ich spreche ein bisschen Deutsch. // shortened: Ich sprech' 'n bisschen Deutsch.
I'm from [country name]. - Ich komme aus [country name]. // shortened: Ich komm' aus [country name].
My name is [your name]. - Mein Name ist [your name]. // Ich bin [your name].
Where's the bathroom? - Wo ist das Badezimmer? // shortened: Wo ist das Bad?
I don't know. - Ich weiß es nicht // Weiß ich nicht. (if you need the first or second form depends on the question) // Keine Ahnung. (this is more like "No idea")
In the name of the moon, I'll punish you! - Im Namen des Mondes werde ich dich bestrafen!

I have a German question for you. ^^ For a while, I was trying to teach myself the language, which is really hard without an instructor I found out. Very Happy Anyway I always thought "How are you?" was Wie geht es inen, or something like that? You have it slightly differently than I thought, so I am curious. Smile

"Wie geht es Ihnen?" is a correct version of the sentence too! However, while "Wie geht es dir?" is meant for friends, family and people you know, "Wie geht es Ihnen?" is for strangers and superiors. The latter one is the polite and formal form Smile

I remember hearing when I was young that "Danke shein" or something like that means Thank you.  Is this the correct way to say Thank you?  And did I butcher the German version XD?

Ah yeah, I forgot that!

You're right, "Danke", or "Dankeschön", can be translated to "Thank you"!
On the other hand, "Bitte", or "Bitteschön", would be "Please". However, "Bitte" also means "You're welcome"! Though most people nowadays say "Kein Ding" or "Kein Problem" (= No problem) Smile

And I just said uber before I saw this post xD

So what do people say when they want to say Good Afternoon then?

And ooh, you say Ciao too (that's Italian I think?) And I am interested in the difference between the two forms of "I don't know"s now.

I love that you provided the translation for Sailor Moon's speech xD

Hahahahah xD What a coincidence xD

We don't say "Good afternoon" at all xD For every time of the day that isn't morning, evening or night, we just use "Guten Tag" xD

Yeah, we often say Ciao (and yes, it's Italian xD)! We also use the English "Hey" and "Bye" quite a lot xD (sometimes, I also hear people saying "Adiós" and "Sayōnara" - we just copy everything xD)

Well, there is no real difference between "Ich weiß es nicht" and "Weiß ich nicht". It's the same words with the same meaning, just in a different order xD
It's just that you wouldn't say "Ich weiß es nicht" at some points. You could - and it would be correct - but no one does xD It's because "Weiß ich nicht" is more common in the spoken language xD

This was a must-do xD
