| Chinese Holidays Okay, first of all, China is known for having a multitude of interesting holidays, however most of aren't really celebrated. The massive exception is Chinese New Year, which pretty much the entire nation indulges in. It's technically 15 days long, but the only ones really celebrated are the first and last. On the first day, people dress up in red and gold, decorate their houses, and have a massive dinner with their families. The dinner has to include chicken, pork, and dumplings, and children are given little red envelopes with money in them. All of this is to symbolize prosperity and luck. In addition, in China, a massive CCTV celebratory broadcast occurs, which contains singers, animal acts, and various other performances. On the last day, it is customary to eat soup with sticky rice-paste balls in it, and a parade happens with people carrying cloth representations of the animals and dancers. Other holidays include the mooncake festival during the end of September's full moon, where people eat little cakes filled with bean paste called mooncakes, observe the moon, and get together with their extended family.
Enjoy!

| I am unsure if China has this, but Taiwan does Ghost Month all through August. I would think that two similar countries would have this tradition. Some of the stories were "don't go in the ocean during ghost month. Don't let your clothes out to dry at night during ghost month because a ghost will relax in the clothes and go inside your house when you bring the clothes in!"
Oh yes....mooncakes. ::Homer Simpson noise:: |

| I actually groan internally whenever I hear "mooncakes". D: Giving mooncakes has become such a commercialized venture in the past few decades that most families typically end up with multiple boxes of mooncakes from friends and work-related functions that it's almost impossible to eat it all. Mooncakes also have very high calories content (a regular sized one is about 1000 calories IIRC o_0), so just eating one leaves you feeling full. I actually try not to go to China during September because invariably someone will give me mooncakes, and I'm not even allowed to bring them back to the US because some mooncakes have whole egg yokes in them. You could say mooncakes are like the Chinese version of fruit cakes for me. XD;; |
