"Bad?" she coughed, a choking strangled laugh escaping her quivering lips. Her small body shook awkwardly, chest heaving.
"The game is bad. The players... us... are trapped," Aurae continued. It took every ounce of her remaining concentration to force out those words.
"No... choice," she struggled, her voice barely a whisper. She could feel her strength fading. Her muscles convulsed involuntarily, spasming in slight and random bursts.
She thought of her family, and wondered if they'd be proud or if they'd simply forget her. She wondered what other little girls and boys would be tossed into this place to fight for sport. She wondered if anyone would ever remember her or cry for her death. She wondered if the Hunger Games would last forever, deaths toll piling up towards infinity. She wondered what the 17-year-olds at the Academy were thinking, and which ones would be in the games next year.
Her eyelids fluttered, and her breath rasped. She coughed and choked, fading quickly. The wound was so deep and she had lost so much blood. It was all meaningless. It had never had a meaning.
Akiko nodded as a tear slid down her face. “Yeah... we were trapped. I think you and I could have possibly be friends too. I’m sorry.” With that she sliced her sword further up Aurae and gutted the other girl like a fish. On normal circumstances she probably wouldn’t have the strength to do this. But she was running on adrenaline, a fever, and several days worth of caffeine pills. Aurae was done. Akiko was done. This was done. She could finally go home.
A canon sounds in the arena.
Trumpets go off, a fanfare! "Congratulations! Akiko of District Five! You are our champion!" A hovercraft appeared, lowering a latter; the latter froze Akiko as soon as it touched her, then pulled her up to be mended and polished before her debut back in the capitol. The 23rd Hunger Games had ended. |

| Natasha feels tears creep up in her eyes. This was by far the hardest hunger games she had ever had to watch being played out. She would have preferred being there in Akiko's place, this game had been harder to endure than the one Natasha herself had played in.
Walking out of the sponsor's room, Natasha races out to the hallway, where she sees her husband with his arms out waiting to hold her. She rushes to him and embraces him, and listens as he whispers, "She's okay. You can kill her when we bring her home." |

| Rei looked away from the screen. It was just a game, a game. So why did she feel a strange sensation in her throat and a prickling at her eyes? She pulled up her trademark half smile, nodded to the others in the room and dared to hope her beautiful pet might be waiting for her at home. But she'd be back, next year, oh yes. As long as there were Games, and as long as she was Rei the Sponsor, she'd be there to enjoy it. How could she miss out on all this fun? Because it was fun, wasn't it...?

| Shimmer stared at the screen blankly. She felt a single tear roll down her cheek, but she would not let this affect her. She knew Aurae might die, and she was sad for that.
"Well I guess there's no other reason for me to stay!" Shimmer announced gathering her things to catch a train back to district one. She knew she would be back next year a little colder than before but that's what the hunger games did to you. She knew it would always be the same until someone changed it but unfortunately it wasn't her. |
