So, I've mentioned Ilucen here and there around the forum (a main character in one of my novels). This little piece is the first thing I've written in first-person in years (six, to be exact), but the half-poem/half-prose approach is intentional. For this, the last line is what is bugging me.


I am a shape in the smoke, a play on your mind. From the blackest aria of your being, I was created. Created to conqueror the night, yet cower and fall before a hand of light.

I am your mirror, smudged by soot. A reflection in water; imprecise, yet similar. A mockery of life, so it is said.

I am the blood that stains your steel, the red that reflects into green. Darkness that bleeds into your flesh, carving out webs of pain. Darkness that has a mind of its own.

I am a weapon, thrust upon the world to serve another. A killer, a representation of shredded history. A soulless monster, incapable of love.

I am part, yet also whole. Just a piece, a blight and jest from the goddesses. Just a person, an unquestionable problem and a walking rebellion.

I am an illusion, echoing so distinctly your own scarred rejection. An undesirable, rebuked for bloody truth. An oddity, cherished by so few.

I am your shadow – A Shade.

I, Lucien, am Ilucen.

I like it...You used a lot of imagery so it was easy to picture it in your mind.
The last line is okay to me, but I don't think I read the book because if I did my feedback would be a lot better.
I didn't know you wrote novels! I want to be a writer when I get older, so it's cool to sort of know an actual author!

XD, well, I attempt. I haven't actually finished any of my novels yet, which is a little depressing when compared to how prolific some of my other writing friends are. This world in particular has a lot of history behind it, though. And the main story in it (this is just a somewhat random monologue from Ilucen, being he sometimes debates the manner of his existence as a magical creation) has been stewing for seven years now. I have about a dozen novel worlds total, but this one is my favorite. <3

Also, did you notice the anagram? (There is another "easter egg" regarding Ilucen's name, but I'm curious if someone noticed.)

Ilucen is Lucien rearranged, yes. It is also a "sound-alike" to "illusion", which is used two lines up.

I didn't realize the Ilucen/illusion thing! That's so cool

It really is fitting, considering how the timeline goes and what goes on in the timeline. (Ilucen is initially an antagonist magically crafted from a piece of Lucien's essence [the essence comes before the soul, and the essence is the base of your very being], but he eventually has a Heel Face Turn.)

Oh... kind of like Dr. Jekkyl and Mr. Hyde, in a way.

XD, debatable.Rather than just having a split personality, it's an entirely separate persona.
