| Heellooo, I'm here to appeal for some help. I've been really interested in at least attempting to make some Sailor Moon AMVs, and I even have a list of ideas, but I'm not sure how to execute it. I have Sailor Moon Center's remastered seasons on my computer, but they run on .mkv files. I have imovie, but it can't edit .mkv's, ALSO the video files are gigantic so how do I even go about getting the clips I need? Is there a way to import clips without importing like an entire season on to a video editing program? Do you guys use special programs to edit AMVs?
*Lots of questions, thanks in advance! |

| you should try to convert your files into a different format, with "Any Video Connverter" for example (it's free) ...
how fast are your pc? my madoka magica-files are 1GB (every episode) and i have no problem to use it. ripped from my OWN dvds btw...
are you a mac user? some programms only run on windows and others only on mac. |

| You could use Any Video Converter (like MU said) and if you use it, use the best codec available. In AVC it is movie format's M2TS-movie codec ( x264) Otherwise the quality suffers A LOT In AVC you may choose the clip you want to convert so that could solve your problem^^. (My problem is my stupid Windows Live Movie Maker... My driver crashes every single time I try to make videos...) I hope this helps you^^! |

| I have a Mac, and I am in the process of downloading AVC at the moment. So is AVC also a video editor? Gosh, some of your lingo is even over my head! What is a codec and what does it do? |

like the name said it's a converter for video files NOT a video editing programm. if people used a mac they should buy 'Adobe Premiere Elements' ... yes elements NOT the super expensiv pro-version.. |

XD Don't worry, I didn't know anything about codecs a little while ago^^ Here's one article http://desktopvideo.about.com/od/glossary/g/codec.htm so you need codec to convert the video^^. It is one factor which can make the quality of the video good or poor. You don't really have to think about it much, just choose the video format which has the x264 codec (par example the MTS-movie) or some other video format you prefer and change the codec (not all formats support the x264 codec but you just have to scroll and search a format which does^^) That's one reason why I recommend the M2TS format, you don't have to look other formats for the x264 codec ^___^. And keep the frame size same as it is, since changing it will make the picture look very bad. Here's my video which gives you an example of the quality when the video is converted with those elements and saved as a 1080 HD file on my Movie Maker (I'm sure your mac can do the same)(and remember to watch in 1080 ) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ga0-xw9F-0 |

| elements are not that espensiv if you compared it to the professional version. for the same price of 10 x elements you get 1 pro version xD
examples -> open score programms (for free): like Movie Maker, iMovie and finally Lightworks (i think Lightworks its the best but dont work on a Mac)
programs to buy for home user: like Adobe Premiere Elements, Sony Vegas Movie Studio, Magix Video Deluxe
professional programms (super expensiv): like Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Sony Vegas Pro bla bla |

| I think lightworks is free, but it's insanely heavyweight and counter intuitive.
Avisynth (editing on windows), and Avidemux (for converting/compressing to a processable format) are my tools of choice, with audacity for working with sounds. |
