The Books that have Affected You the Most Empty
PostSubject: The Books that have Affected You the Most   The Books that have Affected You the Most I_icon_minitime5th May 2012, 11:37 am

Hey, everyone! I think we've all read a book at some point in our lives that has touched us deeply. For me, it was Go Ask Alice. It's the diary of a teenage girl from the seventies who was unintentionally roped into the world of drugs. The diary follows her slow decline into desperation and addiction. Before reading that, I didn't really care about drugs and things like that; I mean, I knew I didn't want to do them but my conviction wasn't that strong because I didn't understand how dangerous they were. But after I read Alice I was so affected I swore to never ruin my life by using drugs and to be careful of my surroundings.

Anyway, has any book really affected you? It doesn't need to be anything life-changing, just a book that caused you to reflect! Very Happy

Go Ask Alice...wow...I remember reading that book ages ago and still haven't gotten the courage to read it again. I would have to say a book that always stuck with me would be The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. Fiction about a girl who is traveling across the ocean to visit family and becomes involved in a mutiny aboard the ship she is on and joins the sailors. Pretty good read, but for a bit of a younger audience.

Roll My Thunder Here My Cry and its sequel Let the Circle Be Unbroken.

These two books are about a Black family living in Mississippi during the depression era. The family actually owns their own land which was rare during this time period especially in the south. The book focuses on the kids of family and effects of racism. I read these two book in 7th grade in my English class. They both really touched me as a kid.

I've read Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry! When I was in fourth or fifth grade, everyday the teacher would read a chapter of a book aloud to us. I remember Roll of Thunder pretty well. It was a touching book.

Interview With the Vampire by Anne Rice forever changed the way I looked at writing and the way I write today. Of course, the downside is that I have the biggest nitpicky way of any author that I come across and can only find another book that I like every three years or so. O.o I read her before vampires became a popular genre, so that in regard to my experience with her is very special. I never read about vampires or the supernatural - it wasn't that aspect that captured me. It was the quiet, heavily desctiptive way that she wrote and the mix of vulnerability and intense emotion that just stirred something inside of me.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. I read this about ten years ago and it was a catalyst for many occurrences during that time in my life. There was a time when I could not read that book without falling into a deep depression. It is better now but it is still is very endearing to me. I met a very special person through that book.

Hotel Iris by Yoko Ogawa is incredible. It is really twisted in a very quiet way and never screams too loudly even at the most disturbing moments. I love the speech in the writing as well.

Aliss by Patrick Sénécal was something like I've never read in my life before. People who have read this book will all agree with me.

This author is totally amazing and he is not afraid of writing in a way that will make you close the book sometimes since his descriptions gives you the full images in your head. Images that can be very shocking sometimes. He shows the human being as good and as twisted he can be in his troubled mind.

His subjects most authors don't often dare elaborating on has made him a different renowned intense writer. Some Quebec movie productions got interested in his style and even made tv series or long movies that went to theaters about some of his books.

I only wonder if they got english versions but I really wouldn't see why it wouldn't. Really, Sénécal is more than a simple icon to me.

Smile

For a quick view of Sénécal's website (In french)
http://www.patricksenecal.net/

Oh I just forgot to mention there was a movie project about ''Aliss'' they decided to abort because they realised they would have to cut too many scenes for the public to see it. Too bad, I really would have liked to see how it would have turned out on the big screen.

I've heard they have been planning on traducing many of his books in english since it got so popular since 2000 and even before. I just don't know if they did it already.

THIS. Interview With the Vampire is my all time favorite book. I actually read my old copy so much it felt apart and I had to buy a new one. Her writing is beautiful and I cannot really find anyone else who manages it. I've read a great deal of the Vampire Chronicles, yet this is the one that still grabs me.

The Holy Bibleci read this book continuously and has really shaped my life mainly because I'm a Christian and it focuses on the aspects of everything I believe in.

Alice in Wonderland
This was my all time favorite book as a child and still is. It really brought out the love of writing in me, especially in coherence to things no one else may think of.

To kill a mockingbird another book dealing with African American families during the great depression and how wrong they were treated.

The Hunger Games
This series left a deep wanting in me after I read it. I've never been so concerned for characters in All my life.

Oh goodness. This is going to be a really long post from me. xD

As a kid, all I did was read since we couldn't afford cable, but I think that was a good thing. haha.

The books I read the most then were all by Eric Carle. Books like A Very Hungry Catepillar, and The Tiny Seed, were my absolute favorite. They are simple tales of creatures trying to find their way through life. Plus, the illustrations are genius and remarkable. He was the first author to make me realize I wanted to write.

As time went on, I read several books for class, and none of them interested me as much the Homecoming series by Cynthia Voigt. I read two of them, which was Homecoming and Dicey's Song. Both novels make you think as a kid on the state of children being abandoned, and I had never been giving a glimpse into that world before I read them in middle school.

Now this may surprised you, since I'm an English major, and we have a stereotype that we only read serious books, plays and Shakespeare. But actually most of my favorite books are Young Adult novels, which is the genre that I'm most interested in writing.

My all-time favorite novel is Jason and Kyra by Dana Davidson. It's about two African-American teens who go to school in Detroit, but meet on chance for a class project. It's of course a typical story of unexpected love, but the reason I love it so much is because of the way Davidson presents each scene. She gives just the right amount of detail. She doesn't jerk the audience into a random scene in the next paragraph. She provides everyone with a wonderful array of characters that anyone could relate to.

I'm currently reading Sundays at Tiffany's by James Patterson. I would recommend it to anyone. I haven't finished it yet, but it's about an unhappy woman who realizes that her imaginary friend from the past is real. I love it so far. I just hope it doesn't end awkwardly. xD

That's just the tip of the iceberg on the books I've read, so I might come back and talk about more.

That is so cool! I read all of the books in the Chronicles as well and I think it is tied with The Vampire Lestat for me. I think Lestat is a beautiful character and I think Anne Rice became more dedicated to how she would portray the characters for the rest of the series in this book. I sometimes get the feeling that she did not intend any other books after Interview in the way she portrayed many of the vampires. But Louis is indeed my favorite; he is so dear to me and I love him and Lestat together.

Ooh, you are a Christian as well! ^^ My favorite book is II Timothy. It is bittersweet to me in a way because it feels very much like a a Goodbye letter from Paul. He feels real and human to me in that book, writing farewell letters and sounding quietly lonely in his calm acceptance of his fate. Sometimes it is hard to identify with figures in the Bible but in that book, he feels the most human.

Alice in Wonderland, oh yes, indeed. Have you read Through the Looking Glass as well?

I'd have to say Jodi Picult's book Ninteen Minutes affected me. I have to say that I hated that book, but to this day I still think on how bullying affects smaller, weaker kids and could lead them to school shooting. It also made me think on abusive relationships. I had to read it in the summer before 10th grade. I still think about it to this day.

I agree they really are...I also remembered some other books I really like:

The Giver: The fact that society may one day come to this because of its "I want to feel good only" motto.
The Witch of Blackbird Pond: I really thought this was interesting how people used to think people who used natural medicine were witches.
The Little Princess: I really love this book! It's always kept a special place in my heart and one of my childhood favorites.

OMG! That's the book! I couldn't remember the name of the book I read in elementary school about a woman who was thought of as a witch during the witch trials. I loved that book! That's one of the many reasons why I am so facinated with the witch trials.\

I'm going to have to find that book again.

Glad to see this topic was revived! I was afraid it was going to die before people got to comment on it! Very Happy

I'm seeing a lot of great books here! A truly excellent book is one that stays with you for LONG after you've read it. It's relatively easy to write something that people will ENJOY, but it's quite another to have it RESONATE. Books that resonate, whether it's positive or negative, are my favorite books! Very Happy

Well, my favorite novel of all time is The Witching Hour by Anne Rice.
My favorite manga series of all time is Rurouni Kenshin. I am very obsessed with that series; it de-throned Sailor Moon.
I started reading The Hunger Games but stopped because I knew it might affect me negatively. Same goes for The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons. It was well-written but so tragic. For some reason, the tragedy of Anne Rice's books never bothered me as much.
My sister has a novel published called Awakening Beauty. It is so dark, opposite of my sister's sunny personality. Reading it showed me her other side.

Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead
I started reading the series when I was going through a serious depression in High School with the break up of my family & other personal stuff going on and it really helped me through. It helped me realize that *I* personally am not responsible for everything in my family and as much as I want to help my Mom and Sister - I need to also take care and remember to put my own wants & needs first sometimes. The main character has to deal with something similar so it really helped me to see a strong female lead going through something different yet similar... Anyway its a great series and I even now have a tattoo from it on my neck to help remind me of what its taught me Smile

@nekosenshi - The tragedy in Anne Rice's books were always beautifully poetic and imploring to me. I never found myself going into a dark place whenever I came across things that seemed unpleasant. She is just such a beautiful writer and has such a way with words.

Last night I read a book that utterly consumed me. It was so powerful and right in the middle of it I had to stop and put it down and take a breath. Just the way it was written, the the topic and the emotions in the characters. Incredible. It is called Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma.

I'd say some other books I was affected by were:
Pet Sematary by Stephen King. Such a scary idea.
Coldheart Canyon by Clive Barker. Imaginative, good...gross too.

And yes, Anne Rice does tragedy well.

When I was in middle school, I read a little book called Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah, and I really liked it, partly because it taught me that not all children are loved and that they can prove to be more than what their families and society expect them to be. Adeline was hated by her parents, blamed for her mother's death at childbirth, but she persevered and triumphed. The book was taken out of the shelf back then, and I didn't find it again until years later. I now own a copy of it, and Adeline's other book, Falling Leaves. They both teach you a lot about what China was like in the 1940s, and China's history in general.

But my all-time favorite book is Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine. As soon as I bought it, I finished it within an hour. It's about an autistic girl whose brother dies in a school shooting, and she learns to both come to terms with that, make friends, understand empathy, and learn more about herself and that some things aren't as scary as she makes them out to be. It has its sad moments, but it manages to balance them out with plenty of happy, heartwarming, funny, and sweet moments to make it a cute little book that all people should read. Best of all, Caitlin, the main character, is a great portrayal of an autistic child. I can relate to her a lot, since I'm autistic myself.

Me too! I think that's why I tend to write more dark fan fics, because I want people to think about them deeply, appreciate what they have, and learn a little something about themselves with it.

The series that's probably caused me to stop and think the most has to be Suzanne Collins Hunger Games trilogy. It's statement and comparison between the fictional society of Panem and today's society is astounding.

Harry Potter: I know some of you will facepalm, but hear me out first! This entry is as much because of the book itself, as it is because the series got me into reading. I live in a former communist country and was born 4 months after the revolution that abolished that regime and gave start to democracy. But until December 1989, you didn't really have access to most international literature and compulsory school reading was of a certain propagandist nature. It's because of this and because my mother came from former peasant parents who didn't know any better, that she was a big fan of Romanian authors such as Mihail Sadoveanu, Ion Creanga, and other nationalists with a penchant for revering peasant life. This sort of literature was, of course, all about peasants, their hard work, how "stupid" Western civilization and values were... plus pages upon pages of descriptions of greasy peasant foods, farm chores and so on. In short, I hated that sort of literature with the passion of a thousand flaming suns. The only other types of books she read were stuff like Alexandre Dumas romanticized pseudo-historical novels. And during my entire childhood, my mother had tried to force these two types of literature down my throat repeatedly; often through shaming me for not being a reader. In short, I read only when I couldn't get away from it, and I couldn't imagine reading as being "pleasurable" instead of a chore. It didn't help that in school the curriculum was still all about these books. In fact, the only time we studied international literature was in high school, in a non-mandatory class that very few of us enrolled in.

Anyway! So that's how young "me" got along with reading... Then one day, when I was 10 years old, I walked into a mall bookstore with my mother and father and I saw the covers of the first two Harry Potter books. They had just been released in our country so they had this little portion of bookstore all to themselves. And they had the American cover designs, only available in hardback (the Romanian editions use the American covers, thank goodness). I think it was the colors that attracted me, and the interesting names: "Philosopher's Stone"... that sounds fancy! And of course, the fact that there were no chickens on the cover, no mention of how beautiful the countryside landscape is, and absolutely no sign of Romanian historical figures. So I asked my mum what those books were about and she told me they were just rubbish and I wouldn't like them (she had no idea about HP, she just saw the colorful covers and assumed they were bad kids' literature). So because I am as stubborn as a mule and always have been, I asked my dad if I could buy the first one and he was okay with it... So when I got home I jumped on the bed to "read", just because my mum insisted that I had thrown the money out the window and would never touch the book. And to my surprise, something NEW happened: I didn't care too much about the first 2-3 pages, some babble about a suburban couple and their home (the Dursleys, haha) but then I was completely engulfed by the characters and story and especially the wizarding world... Soon enough I had finished the first book and was nagging dad to go back and get the second one and when "Chamber of Secrets" was over I had to wait for every other book to be released... This was before we had Internet and before Harry Potter was a big "thing" (the first movie came out more than a year later) so for volume 3 and 4 I had to wait for the Romanian release. Afterwards I started getting my books in English and I could finally be up to date with the international releases.

And that's how I discovered how awesome reading REALLY was.

I will add other entries later on, but I thought the one that really deserved to be mentioned was the book that saved me from thinking that literature was boring and a chore Razz

The Vampire Academy series... not necessarily because its profound or anything, but one of the main themes of the first few books is that the main character, who has sworn her life to protect her friend (literally, she trains as a guardian) has always been told that her friend must come first - before anything including love or dreams. I've felt similar about my family, as I had an abusive father and I was always the one protecting my mom and sister. When I left for university, my dad started verbally abusing my mom and sister again, and I was depressed because I was hours away and felt I couldn't do much other than inform police (who didn't really do much most of the time). I was sooo close to giving up on University (thus forfeiting a scholarship I had) and moving back home..  But the book kinda helped me realize that I can't ALWAY be there, and I can't just not go to university and come home every time. I need to also put myself first. I can still help and be there for my mom emotionally and support her, but I can do it without giving up my dreams and what I want. It ended up working for the better because my mom got stronger and eventually stood up to him and left him.

Anyway, long story short; the book helped me a lot when going through some stuff. I even have tattoos of the guardian marks to remind me of what I realized because of the book.
