| For the most part, I'm actually enjoying Viz's new dub of Sailor Moon. So please remember this is not a bashing thread, just a place for....complaints/grievances/etc.
That out of the way...I've got a bone to pick with Viz.
What the hell is with their Moonlight Densetsu translation? They actually left the "gomen ne" and "shinjiteru" untranslated in the English subtitles as if they were doing a mirror of Japanese throwing in English into songs. What. The. Heck.
Even in the 4th episode "Usagi hansei! Sutā no michi wa kibishii" (Usagi Learns her Lesson: Becoming a Star is Hard Work"), when Usagi and Naru sing Moonlight Densetsu they actually have them sing it like their English translation!! So they literally sing "Gomen ne I cannot say it" or whatever they translate it as (i don't have the episode in front of me, i'll have to go double check later xD). For some reason this really bothers me as it feels like its pandering too hard to "weeaboo" like fans (I say that for a lack fo better word right now, not trying to be offensive). I'm as hard core as any other fan about Sailor Moon but it just seems awkward and lazy.
And I'm gunna step off my soap box for now. I'm sure I'll have something later on as I go through season 1. xD

| There are many issues in my opinion about the Viz dub. Mostly related to acting and how they chose to format the video. For me, the actual acting could have a lot more emotion involved into it. I know these aren't the actors I'm used to in the English version, so that's why I'm trying to be a bit more optimistic. However I do think that new age voice acting is going downhill. (Old ADV was amazing.) I will also add here when I watch more. I'm trying to go into this with a clean slate but it's a bit..hard.

| I'm not the type of person to really analyze the dub as a whole (xD). I don't really like the voices, especially Usagi's. They just sound really off to me. |

| @Moonlight Dreaming - I read somewhere that Naoko had a say in picking the English voice cast. Translating the Japanese Voice into English variants is very complex. I also do not like the casting, but for what it is it makes sense that Usagi sounds the way she does. It's the American version of what a girl like Usagi would sound here.
Honestly though, I still think it's off even if Naoko did help. XD |

From what I understand, a lot of the video issues they have are fixed in later season releases. Which is great but...kinda wish they'd go back and fix the episodes in the early seasons that had issues. Though from what I understand, Viz got kinda screwed on the originals from Toei and didn't get the best quality (in comparison to other countries that rereleases Sailor Moon since the 20th anni) so Viz did what they could with digital filters to make the video look good for blu ray release. Then a few years into this...Japan starts releasing their own blu rays. Man, I wonder how Viz feels about that. Got a bit wordy below so TL;DR: IMO Acting improves and overall dub is good with exception of a few characters. xD - Spoiler:
Voices, personally, with the exception of a few side characters, I think they are pretty good. Not as widely varied as the Dic dub was but good. They also improve as the episodes go on. A few years back I actually "watches" (listened to it while working XD) the dub via Hulu up to R and then found some of S on one of those kissanime type sites. Then, I watched the movies in theater. I thought the movies were excellent! A big improvement from season 1.
Honestly the voice casting is probably my smallest gripe as there was clear improvement as you continue to watch. I know a lot of people prefer the old dubs voices but honestly as a whole, it is an improvement. Go watch clips on SailorSays or Viz vs Dic dub comparisons and tell me it isn't. There aren't any of those awkward slang lines, no gutteral throaty cigarette smoking sounding characters (like how they wrecked "Katzy" in the dub), no flat sounding yelling or screaming. Side characters like Shingo and Umino don't have voices that fit, imo, but I think that's minor once we get to the point where the characters don't show up anymore anyway. xD
But I can totally get where you are coming from. I felt the same way on my first "watch" through, especially the first season. Wasn't super sold on Usagi or Luna either but I think I've started to come around to them more.

Yeah, I finally broke down to get the Bluray/DVD combo of the first half of SE1. I haven't seen anything mentioned but I'll double check it! Pretty sure the booklet that came with it just has art tho. :/ - Starchild wrote:

It's possible it came out of the mouth of a Viz representative at a panel or something but I don't remember seeing anything of that and well....we all know how rumors spread in this fandom. xD |

| I cannot stand Usagi's voice! When she talks normally, she sounds okay but when she transforms and does an attack, omg it's like torture! |
