Advanced Character Profile

Character Name: Nadeshiko Yamado (山門·撫子)
Her name is a pun on the phrase "Yamato Nadeshiko (大和撫子)", technically a Japanese Dianthus flower, but used as a term for the ideal Japanese woman, particularly in the post-World War II era. Her surname, Yamado, is comprised of the kanji for "mountain" (山) and "gate" (門). She typically writes her given name with hiragana: なでしこ.
Gender: Female
Age and Date of Birth: 14, July 30th (Leo)

Used Canons: Moonless Sky's Iron Tokyo, inspired primarily by Sailor Moon manga and 90s anime, perhaps with a dash of Crystal and the live-action.

Appearance: With her diminutive height, long hair, and pale skin, Nadeshiko resembles a doll more than a living creature—until the observer notices the way the eyes glance briskly at her surroundings. Years of illness and poor nutrition stunted her growth; she is extremely short, standing at 147cm (~4'10"), and her thinness is not attractive, but instead unnerving. Her thin skin bruises easily; she usually dresses in layers both in an attempt to cover herself and keep warm despite lacking natural insulation. Nadeshiko is often mistaken for a younger child, especially when they hear her high-pitched, slightly lisping voice.

Her inky hair is extremely long, often mistaken for a wig. She will sometimes loop and pin it behind her head to follow the school dress code or when cleaning and cooking, but she prefers to wear it long. Nadeshiko is quite vain about her hair, even if she'd never admit it. It reaches her calves at its full length, bluntly cut straight across. Her bangs are slightly center-parted due to a cowlick, but they are also bluntly cut just long enough to show off her shaved and drawn on dot-shaped eyebrows. A section of hair frames her face on each side, bluntly cut just at the level of her mouth. She selected this hairstyle based on images of ancient Japan, but found the trouble of additional layers too time-consuming to maintain.

Her round eyes are a strange golden hue, sometimes more yellow or more brown depending on the light. Her pupils are paler than normal and permanently enlarged, a condition caused by a specific air pollution contaminant. This makes Nadeshiko somewhat more sensitive to light and eye strain. She often wears thin-framed round-lens glasses at home or when studying in an attempt to provide some relief. She tries to appear calm and unruffled, but her body language betrays that she is constantly anxious. Her glance dart about constantly, yet she pointedly avoids making eye contact. She's easily startled; her already large eyes widen further when she is surprised.

Nadeshiko enjoys wearing makeup, but her sense of style is very different from that of her peers or anyone of interest. She tries to copy old trends that she's seen or only heard of, often with a questionable degree of accuracy. Her school expressly forbids this. She is most commonly seen in her school uniform, a drab sailor-collar affair of gray wool with a black scarf. Her personal style is constrained by her resources—she has little money and her tastes are bizarrely old-fashioned. She usually dresses in a utilitarian manner because she must, not because she wants to. If she could, she'd layer herself with embroidered silk robes and folded paper hairpieces, but she only owns a few such treasured items.

Personality: Nadeshiko is the consummate "scaredy cat". She seems to be afraid of nearly everything, her movements and her thoughts flighty and tinted with fear. Her constant anxiousness is clearly visible to others, particularly in her occasional stutter, fidgety habits, and a tendency towards tears. She can be focused in school and for projects, but there's a clear time limit on her ability to push back the overwhelming wave of towering concerns. She doesn't have a very good sense of humor and never seems to understand or even recognize harmless jokes. She cries extremely easily—usually a result of stress.

She doesn't seek comfort from others, instead trying pitifully to pretend that she is fine and there's nothing wrong. She's not particularly believable for some of these instances, even though she's typically capable of lying when it benefits her. She'd be more convincing if she wasn't visibly shaking or if there were any onions present as the "reason" for her watery eyes. Admitting her anxiety makes it seem more real and more oppressive; the poor attempts to dismiss are part of her overall coping strategy. Her habit of daydreaming has gotten her in trouble on a fairly regular basis. She's an escapist and spends enough time in denial to qualify as Cleopatra. (Even if she wouldn't get the joke and it doesn't necessarily make sense anymore in Iron Tokyo.)

Nadeshiko often feels oppressed by her own thoughts, her every move constantly judged and found wanting. She's tried all sorts of meditation and calming techniques, but nothing really seems to provide much relief. Nadeshiko is nervous and fearful, bordering on paranoia; as a result, she trusts rarely. She often displays compulsive tendencies. She is also naive, partially due to her rather sheltered life and partially due to her escapist tendencies. It's so much easier to ignore problems than to admit them and deal with them. This is somewhat ironic considering that she is actually a fairly adept problem-solver, but she is much more comfortable applying this to schoolwork and other external scenarios instead of to herself, personally. She loathes confrontation and will bend herself into knots to avoid having to say "no".

Although she doesn't handle pressure with much grace, she has enough stamina to survive. She forces herself to leave the comfort of her home, one of the few places she feels more at ease, because she's constantly searching for information. She knows that she'll never learn or experience more things if she stays inside, and there's so much history that leaking from this cracked and decaying world that has already been lost to time. The world can be terrifying, but although she might cry, or jump, or freeze for a moment, she does her best to drag herself forward so that she can be here. Thoughts like that have kept her going during days that seemed to stretch for years, staring at the ceiling of a hospital room.

In the rare situation where Nadeshiko feels at ease, and particularly when she trusts someone, she can be very clingy. This can be exasperating for the poor souls that the dark-haired girl has singled out, but her good-hearted nature particularly shines when her nervousness is somewhat under control. She's loyal and giving, always trying to see what she can do to make the other person smile. Her brother is generally the recipient of her attention, and although he sometimes chafes at her near-smothering, his doting only encourages her.

Any Unique Abilities/Skills:

  • Extremely interested in history, primarily of Japan but not exclusive to the country.
  • Subject to mild clairaudience and telepathy—Nadeshiko hasn't realized that one of the reasons she feels so constantly on-edge is because she's hearing things that aren't spoken aloud, sometimes the thoughts of those around her, sometimes communications from things unseen. She believes that what she sometimes "hears" are her own wayward or nagging thoughts, not realizing that she's picking up emotionally charged messages from the people nearby or similarly dramatic impressions of the past based on her location.

History: Nadeshiko was born to a modest, hard-working family in Iron Tokyo. Her parents—a mid-ranking salaryman and a dedicated professional assistant—travel constantly for work. The two work for different companies in different fields, and their travel schedules rarely coordinate. She loves her parents, but has a much closer relationship with her older brother, Yuuichirou, twelve years older than herself, who practically raised her. The family home is a small two-bedroom apartment also shared by an elderly aunt Chika, her mother's sister, who was the official guardian of both children when they were small.

As a student at Iron Bridge Municipal High School, her grades are average—which has typically been her history. It's actually somewhat impressive that she manages to hold a moderate academic score given her constant absences from class. She particular shines in History (one of the few classes she truly enjoys) and the Japanese language. Her teachers are sometimes annoyed by her questions, often requesting detailed explanations for elements of the curriculum that they are not as familiar with because it would never be on a standardized exam.

Other Noteworthy Facts:

  • History of illness since early childhood—is frequently sick and has been hospitalized many times. She has not been diagnosed with an additional specific chronic condition, besides her eyesight issues, outside of "weakened immune system".
  • Hates being treated like a child and often lies about her interests and preferences in hopes of seeming "more adult". She loves sweets and doesn't enjoy sour or pungent foods, but she often professes to dislike sugary treats and prefer mature, complex flavours that require a refined palette. Similarly, she insists that she "likes" news programs about politics and "doesn't care for" popular music.
  • Her favourite colour is scarlet red.

[Advanced] Faux-Senshi: Sailor Phobos [WIP] Z8E47rq · Her symbol is a heart-shape formed by two back-to-back "P" elements with a downward-facing arrow, usually represented in shades of red.

Powers:

Weapons and Magical Items:

  • L.U.N.A. Phobos Pager - A modified fingerprint-reading pager-looking device that allows her to transform into Sailor Phobos. It resonates with the Rhodochrosite Onenju for her transformation.
  • Rhodochrosite Onenju - A bracelet of red polished Buddhist "thought beads", worn on Nadeshiko's right wrist. Four of the beads, spaced evenly around the bracelet, are a paler stone and larger size. There is a large golden tassel with Phobos' symbol embroidered on it in red. A small golden crescent moon charm dangles near the tassel. It resonates with the L.U.N.A. Phobos Pager for her transformation.
  • Kinchaku SNAP! - A small red silk drawstring bag embroidered with stylized fireworks that Sailor Phobos calls on to produce small novelty fireworks that can be used primarily for distraction during battle. She can pull from it four general types, seemingly with no limit:
--• Flash - Creates a burst of sparkles to temporarily blind and confuse her opponent.
--• Smoke - Creates a cloud of smoke that can hide herself or others, obscuring what is seen; may cause coughing.
--• Noise - Creates a single flash with a loud "POP!" that can leave ears ringing and sometimes induces dizziness.
--• Burn - Creates a warm snap that can cause low-level damage and may leave a burn.
