EDIT/UPDATE/FIRST TIME BOARD VISITOR:
Dear Wonderful Curious Person,
Thank you for clicking on this board! The next few posts up to /UPDATE/ are old, mostly about FFXIV Version 1.0, before the Seventh Umbral Era (an in-game term referring to the time before the red moon Dalmund fell and characters were sent into the future). Rather than start a brand new thread, I thought I'd continue this one to keep everything in one spot.
In a nutshell, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is a Final Fantasy themed MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role playing game). You create a character from one of five races (each race has two clans within that race for super awesome customization, and unique backgrounds and histories are abound), choose a starting class (your job, whether a disciple of the land, the hand, of war or of magic), and start off on your adventure in one of three starting cities (and, seriously, everything is rich in culture and history). There are chocobos to be raised, Grand Companies and Free Companies to be joined, monsters to fight, mysteries to unravel, and an invading force to fight off!
What I'm trying to say is that Final Fantasy XIV:ARR is a seriously pretty, well-put-together, addictive and fun MMORPG. It will be released on August 27th for both PC and PS3. The monthly fee is around $13.00, less if you buy months in bulk, and I'll bet that the first month is free when you buy the game. If you have any interest in playing, I'm a level 50 WHM (and a myraid of other classes and jobs at random other levels; whm is my only maxed job though) and I'd love to help you level-up! My linkshell/Free Company is looking for members (and we can make a splinter group for Sailor Moon!) and we'll be working to make our own airship and seaship soon after we buy our first house! ((AND START CHOCOBO RAISING YES!))
If you'd like more information, or would like to run the benchmark on your computer, visit:

Or ask me. XD I'm kinda a nerd. And may or may not be a beta tester.

Jump right to the new (Phase 3 beta test/NDA lifted) stuff!
Old first post is below Hey!
^^ I was just wondering if anyone else played FFXIV or were planning on playing it. It had a ton of kinks in the beginning, but they're working really hard to correct all the annoyances and a lot of the biggest pet peeves have been done away with, and it just keeps getting better and better. Their efforts will accumulate to create FFXIV version 2.0, which will be released this November for computer and next January for PS3 and XBox360. XD I just wanted to see if anyone else on here jumped on early, like me.
I got the game at launch, but only since I got my husband into it have I actually been going places. ^^' If you want to give it a try, join Besaid! I'm Sinaka Kyralih and I'll help you out! XD
Note: sorry for the high spec requirements. (._. ) that should improve with 2.0....

Could you explain this a little more? I've never played one of their games like this, I know FFXI is similar is it not??
I'm mostly wondering how it could be transferred to the xbox360..

FFXI was an amazing game; this is the one they wanted to take to another world, with races that were physically similar but with different backgrounds and characteristics. It's set in Eorzea and... well I have to link the starter video:
FFXI was available on both XBox and PS2; they were planning to release FFXIV on 3 and 360 last year, but with the reviews and general uproar over the stuff they neglected or just plain left out ((FFXI's auction house system was the most successful auction system in MMO's of the day - WoW modeled their's off of XI's, but the developer left it out of XIV entirely?! Angry angry fans.)) They make it so you could control the game via controller through your XBox, or you could get the keyboard and mouse attachments and play it like you would on a computer.
They're even considering a voice chat function for 2.0, as well as female highlanders (the human-looking people; there were two subraces, midlander (male and female) and highlander (only male)) and male Miqo-te (kitty girls).
Recently they introduced Chocobos back in, as well as a limited-time-only gigantic monster you can ride ^^ It's pretty neat. ^^
Official Site - supreme eye candy. ♥ The Lodestone - a little more in-depth about how the game functions (also official site for players)
Uuug and they make your character feel so special and unique in the world, and there are different storylines based on where you start out -- it's just so pretty xD

I have been wanting to play, but the only problem with it was I don't have a machine that would run it. Wasn't it supposed to come out on the PS3 and never did?

Yeah; they're planning a release for the PS3 after Version 2.0 launches in November; console releases are planned for next January, I think.
They didn't want to waste the time and money releasing the product of last year on another platform based on how poorly it was received on the computer. ^^'
So Version 2.0 will be released in November with all the upgrades and redos and reprogramming since Beta stage (and they're kinda calling this first launch of the game an extended beta, lol) and adding in new character options (like male cat people and female mountain humans) while downgrading the game so that computers don't have to be so high-end to play it.

Is the game like Final Fantasy XII? I LOVED that one and would've loved to be able to play a similar game online with others. What are the fees? (I actually did Google, but couldn't find any info). I wonder if their are any private servers? I play Guild Wars legit and I've tampered on a WoW private server. I would love to play if I could ^^ (I'm still looking details up, I didn't realize this game was already out.)

GAAASP I can't believe I didn't see your post, Kakyuu!!
Okay! So FFXIV is already out, but it actually ends next Wednesday (like that's the last time they record your character data) and their world is completely destroyed by a meteor on November 11th. Then, some time either really late this year or early next year, they release FFXIV: A Realm Reborn, that carries on a long time after the meteor strikes. Cool part for current players was that all of our characters were rescued at the last second and flung into the future! C: so we keep all our stats and etc. ^^
BUT THE NEW GAME IS GOING TO BE SO COOL I'M JUST SO PSYCHED!! I think the fees are somewhere around $12.00/month and you choose your server - they tell you the general populations so you can choose if you want to be on a really crowded server or a relatively uncrowded server (I was in a three chocobo rating (out of four, with four being most populated) and it was really nice; people are there, but aren't always around and in your face. ).
I can go on and on about it, really ^^'
OH BUT HERE'S SOMETHING EXCITING JUST FOR ME! I finally finally finally maxed out one of my jobs! I'm a level 50 Conjurer / White Mage! The final quest had super amazing cut scenes. :3
BUT HERE'S MY FAVORITE ONE!:
That's me. Standing up to a bunch of angry, out of control elementals, trying to keep them at bay. ;_; and then this elemental that's been pretty much stalking me stands up to me and helps, and then says she'll always be with me and transforms into a new piece of gear so she'll always protect me. ;____;
BUT YES.
In ARR I am sooo wanting to make a Sailor Moon themed player's guild (called "Grand Company"). :3

Start of ARR Beta Test Phase Three Update!
Well, almost anyway. The NDA for beta testers has been partially lifted, and I can now talk fully about the game and post screen-shots of Phase 3 material. Phase three starts on June 14, the day after E3 and the new trailer is released! (and you can bet your bottom dollar that I'll be posting that new video here!). ^^' I know that I probably won't get a lot of interest in the game (especially this far from release... which is (again) August 27th), but I wanted to put the information up just in case/hoping someone might pick up the game with me.
As I have absolutely no new information, this is I guess kind of a "Watch out!" post because... well, starting next Saturday there might (read: will) be a few posts here now and again... so it might periodically pop up in the Latest Topics board... unless I start feeling self-conscious and just edit posts to make one long BOOK OF A POST about it. Which might be likely.
I just really want to share the amazing graphics and gameplay!
Oh! If anyone has any questions I will answer what I can!
My FFXIV tumblr; it's kinda sparse right now, but when game launches I'll be throwing out such stuff there. Even more than here.

Pre-Ordering and Purchasing Final Fantasy XIV:A Realm Reborn
Pre-Ordering Pre-Ordering, of course, means that you get it the day it comes out, whether you choose digital download or obtain a physical copy of the game. Why should you pre-order? For BONUSES, you silly thing! For Pre-Ordering FFXIV:ARR you get early access to the game and
Cait Sith Plushie Minion
Mog Cap
which are seriously adorable tbh. "Minions" in FFXIV are like pets in WoW and other games; just cute little things that follow you around whose sole purpose in life is to look adorable and make your friends go "aww!"; the mog cap, on the other hand, is so your friends will look at you and say "aww!" XD
Purchasing You can purchase the game through digital download and through physical copy, and there are two versions of the game to purchase. The first is the Standard Edition, which is... you guessed it, Standard. That's not to say it's worthless or somehow less than other copies - you get the game, all of the game, you just don't get any of their fancy promotional items. The PC Standard Edition's price is $29.99, and the physical copy can be bought pretty much anywhere, including (for 11 cents less!) Amazon.com. All digital copies are bought through SquareEnix's website, and that's linked in the title of this post. Of course, then there is the PS3 Standard Edition, which is $39.99 and will be available for both physical purchase (amazon has it, along with many other places) and digital download.
Now, what's beyond Standard? The Collector's Edition. The Collector's Edition is a little pricier, selling for three different prices. First is PC Digital Download, where it sells for $49.99, then PC Physical Copy for $69.99, and the PS3 version for $79.99. Now why the heck would someone pay that much more for the same game?! Guys, we've been through this. THE BONUSES! When you purchase the Collector's Edition in its physical form, you get

Subscription Fee Now there's one more thing to discuss, and that's that Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is a subscription based game. Director Yoshida (Yoshi-P~) discussed at length why they chose to go with a subscription based service as opposed to free-to-play, and I completely agree with his points. Free-to-play games are meant to make money fast to pay back their investors. It's quickly put together and they sell items for real cash on their websites. ... so those who make the most money IRL will be the best equipped in game, and I, for one, think that's a load of bull. It shouldn't matter how much I make, just how much time and love I put into the game. A second point made was that because free-to-play games make all their money by selling game items IRL, they have to make a ton of in-game items, most of which look similar to each other. They're keeping FFXIV subscription based to keep the quality up! You won't have to buy your way to better gear - you can craft it! You can purchase it from the Gil you make in-game through doing in-game quests! And without the need to constantly throw together more items for the masses with money to purchase, the team put time and thought into every item they produce, so when it is released through special battles, you can bet it doesn't look like anything else.
That said, here is the subscription model and prices:
The highlighted blue price shows the most cost-effective subscription model. By agreeing to play and pay for 180 days, you only pay $12.99 a month, while buying shorter subscriptions has you pay up to two dollars more a month. That bottom "Entry" fee is for when you start playing the game; you get one character per server, are only locked in for 30 days, and pay $12.99, so you can decide whether you really want to play or not. ... also, typically they give you one month free access when the game starts, but I can't make that promise until it's been officiall announced.
Okay! And that's a rundown of pre-ordering, purchasing, and subscription fees for Final Fantasy XIV! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask! ... and if you really want to try the game out when it launches and they don't give the first month free, there's a strong strong possibility that I might pay for your first month to get you in the door. I'm a Legacy member so my subscription cost is less than other people, and if my sending you a prepaid FFXIV Service card helps to nudge your foot through the door, I might totally do that.
OMG THE NEW TRAILER IS COMING IN TWENTY MINUTES YAY!

Thanks! ^__^ She's just adorable. Her race is called a Lallafell, and being a Dunesfolk there's a naming mechanism you can use (it's just for fun, but why not?!); every letter stands for a syllable; a repeated letter is a repeated syllable. For Dunesfolk Lallafel, its AAB AB ((Like Momoko Moko)). Since Usausagi Usagi is a mouthful (u.u and 'usa' is more than one syllable) I went for the Mixx translations and called her..
Bunbunny Bunny!
XD
She's a conjurer (because Sailor Moon must be a white mage at some point. ^^')) and now she's level 10, u.u but I've played through Gridania's opening stuff like three times now, so I... just now made a Mamoru. Say hello to:
K'moru Nunh!
Wth, you say, that sounds nothing like Mamoru. Well, I used their naming convention. For Seekers of the Sun Miqo'te ((the other race is "Keepers of the Moon" which my other Usagi look-alike is. and as cute as Mamoru being a keeper of the moon sounds, I kept it to his roots rather than a romantic vision~)) the naming convention is kinda complicated. Well, the second name isn't. They live in tribes like Lion tribes - one breeding male and other nonbreeding males. The breeding males, the highest rank and best fighters, have the surname "Nunh" and the others are "Tia". Their first name shows their tribe and their given name; typically their given name is single syllabic, (Moru from Mamoru; K'mamo sounds weird, but K'moru rolls off the tongue nicely). Why K'? K stands for the Hipparion tribe, whose symbol is a horse. That might end up being a flying horse. Which is perfect for the Prince of Earth.
He's a Gladiator, eventually possibly a Paladin.
...and now I'm going to continue getting my hopes up and making the other girls.

First Go at FFXIV Senshi:
Makochan, the Sea Wolf Roegadyn Monk!
The name I gave her, following the Roegadyn sea-wolf tribes naming convention (and using their dictionary!) is Eyhageim Doendrachwyn "OakGem, ThunderDragon's Daughter" u.u now almost all of me was like MAKE HER A PALADIN! but I already made Mamoru a paladin. u.u Monks fight close with hand-to-hand skills and deal lots of damage; while Jupiter does take a lot of hits, she also gives them, so I thought maybe I could squeak this through.
Amichan! The Duskwight Elezen Scholar!
And I shall call her Ami Eaulette, because their naming conventions show that females' names usually end in -elle, -ette, or 'ie', and they're primarily french sounding, so, viola! ...Eau means water. u.u this is where i am, guys. !!ALSO YES SHE'S WEARING HER MERCURY VISOR BECAUSE THERE WAS A TATTOO LIKE THAT.
Minakochan~ The Midlander Hyur Dragoon! (dragoon armor not known because...then you wouldn't see her face or hair)
As Midlander Hyur names are typically anglo-saxon, celtic, or Briton, for Minako I just took her English name, Mina, and lengthened it to it's full form. (Sorry Mina P!) Wilhelmina Faux. Dragoons deal damage from strategic positions.
Reichan! The Highlander Hyur Thurmaturge
And I shall call her... Rene Fireflower ((Highlanders tend to adopt 'colorful' nicknames earned in battle as their last names)) ((ahahaha Rene sounds like 'reign' so it's like Reign of the Fire Flower. BURNING MANDALA! XD))
So. ... yes.
EDIT: Since I mentioned Miqo'te Usagi earlier... And maybe now you see my problem. Lallafell Usagi is adorable, but then Miqo'te Usagi is cute, too! It's like choosing between the hippo and the horse. :/ Keeping with naming conventions, she'd be something like Usa Menphina; Keepers of the Moon are matriarchal, so the last name is passed from mother to daughter and girls are given strong, one-to-two syllable first names. Menphina is the name of their larger (well, now /only/) moon.

Thinking through the Senshi races.... I chose poorly XD HERE ARE MY NEW IDEAS PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CORRECT AND OFFER SUGGESTIONS~
If Makoto were a FFXIV character, I think she would either be a Highlander Hyur or a Hellsguard Roegadyn. Makoto had a bad reputation for fighting (for a good cause), and is much taller and stronger than the other girls. Both of these racial choices are taller and stronger than the other races and are known for their fighting prowess. Of the two, though, I think a Hellsguard Roegadyn would fit her best. A Hellsguard Roegadyn use common tongue names, are often sell-swords or bodyguards (Makoto often acted like a bodyguard towards girls she didn’t even know). A Hellsguard’s name is usually independent of their familial name, and, being an orphan, while Makoto might know and remember her parents, she isn’t incredibly connected to them. She is herself. Most of their names are also connected to nature, which Makoto Kino (Kino being ‘of wood’) fits.
Roegadyn
Massive and muscular frames
Descendants of maritime people from northern seas
Often considered barbaric
Fiercely competitive
Compassion and unswerving loyalty
Greatest Warriors in History
Hellsguard Small clan Homeland north of Abalathia’s Spine Mercenaries Names are easily remembered ones of common tongue Ul’dah Sellswords and bodyguards Use common tongue for naming words; both pulling from nature Surnames are independent; often dropped
If Rei were a FFXIV character, I think she’d be either a Seeker of the Sun Miqo’te or a Wildwood Elezen. Rei is argumentative, honorable, quiet (to the passerby) and intense. She’s loyal and often ambitious. I think being a Wildwood Elezen would fit in that all Elezen have a high sense of honor and pride and have a grudging peace with the other most populace race (as she had with Usagi in the beginning). I chose Wildwood as the clan because Wildwood Elezen have a fondness for law and order, and are haughty and argumentative. However… there is another aspect to Rei that doesn’t often come out, but would be interesting to add to her FFXIV profile, and that’s her relationship with her politician father. You can tell she would like nothing more than to break her ties with him, and for that reason I also consider making her a Seeker of the Sun Miqo’te. In game, Miqo’tes are supposedly the least populated of the races. They are territorial; most lead solitary lifestyles. Seeker of the Sun Miqo’tes have big tribes, prefer daylight, and often revere the goddess of the sun and war, Azeyma the Warden. Theirs is a patriarchal society that can be seen as really unfair to girls – each ‘breeding male’ can have between 10 and 50 females in his tribe/clan and is the only one to mate with them. He’s the strongest, he’s the best, he’s the leader, and only other males can challenge him to leadership of the pack. Girls have names that reflect their tribe, and their last name is simply their sire’s name – their mother has no mention. It’s unfair and for someone like Rei, I think it’d be an interesting character concept for her to play with. Why did she leave her tribe? Because her father is a pompous chibi, that’s why, and she knows she’s worth more than what staying would have gotten her.
Miqo’te
Less populace than other races
Migrated during Age of Endless Frost, Fifth Umbral Era
Pursued wildlife

If Ami were a character in FFXIV, I think she’d be either a Midlander Hyur or a Sea Wolf Roegadyn. I don’t really have any other ideas for her, either; I just think Midlander Hyur would fit her best. Hyurs are the most populace of the races, are of average height and build, and, most importantly, have a very diverse heritage and are well established in every city. Why is that important? Because I can see Ami born in a healing or scholarly family that had been settled in as knowledgeable people for a long time. Also, most of the other races have something imbued in their culture that just goes against Ami’s Ami-ness, and while there are always exceptions to the rules, I can just see her as the unassuming Hyur. Plainsfolk Lalafells are relaxed and carefree, Dunesfolk are obsessed with commerce; Elezen are haughty or despise cities, Miqo’te are territorial and war-like. There are extreme generalities, but, still; I just see Ami as a hyur. ((and Highlander Hyurs take last names earned in battle; I think they’re a little too war-like for Ami)) The other option was Sea Wolf Roegadyn, who are are fiercely competitive (and I know Ami can be that way about her studies), but are also massive with muscular frames. They have high compassion and unswerving loyalty, though, so you see I’m torn.
Hyur
Most populous of the civilized races.
Average physique (height and build)
Champion personal freedom and liberty
Eclectic variety of languages and traditions – Diverse Heritage.
Lack of unified cultural identity.
Midlander Hyur Half pop. Settling in low-lying regions Established in every city Diverse lives
If Minako were a character in FFXIV, I think she’d be… well, I cannot see her as an Elezen, Hyur, or Roegadyn, so that leaves either a Miqo’te, or a Lalafell. If a Miqo’te (if for nothing else than her flirty playful Minako-shmexiness), I’d see her more as a Keeper of the Moon than a Seeker of the Sun because, while the Seekers of the Sun seem more open and out there, the Keepers of the Moon revere the Goddess of the Moon (and love!), and are matriarchal. If she were still serving as a possible Usagi double, and the Keepers of the Moon seem made for Princess Serenity family stuff, then Minako would be one, too. And she’d be the most sexy-playful Keeper there was, and would start her own backwards harem and stock it with only the most handsome Miqo’te guys out there. And maybe a Rei. If a Lalafell, then for the relaxed and carefree nature of the Plainsfolk… or the inclination of transforming ideas into action Dunesfolk… either could work. … But I see Mina as more a Miqo’te. I mean, sexy cat girl. What more would Mina want?
Miqo’te
Less populace than other races
Migrated during Age of Endless Frost, Fifth Umbral Era
Pursued wildlife
Territorial – many life solitary lifestyles
Males shy away from others
Keepers of the Moon Nocturnal; small familial groups (2-3 families) Prefer night Menphina the Lover, goddess of the moon Hunt in thick woodlands of Black Shroud – conflict with Gridanians (seen as poachers) Some made peace and live in Gridania Matriarchal Females keep family names and are given short first names Males take their mother’s first name with a suffix denoting familial position and her last name.
If Usagi were in FFXIV, I see her as one of two things: a Keeper of the Moon Miqo’te or a Plansfolk Lalafell. Keepers of the Moon seem tailored to fit the Silver Millennium lunar royalty and line, I mean they’re a matriarchal society that revere the goddess of the moon. And they’re part kitties. And Serenity thinking of Princess Serenity and remarking “Curious as a kitten” just sticks with me. Hello. But the other option, a Lalafell, is just TOO ADORABLE FOR WORDS. They’re diminutive and rotund, have small and childlike countenances, are welcoming to outsiders, and Plainsfolk have relaxed and carefree manners. And they’re cute as buttons omg. But, honestly, Miqo’te is kinda tailored and how could I ignore that?

And besides, then she and Minako and Rei could be a hit pop sensation in Ul’dah.
Now, if Mamoru were a FFXIV character, really there’s only one choice: Hyur, if for nothing but “Hyurs champion personal freedom and liberty, have and know an eclectic variety of languages and traditions with a diverse heritage, and have a lack of a unified cultural identity.” Mamoru. The guy with the strangest library known to man, can speak at least two languages, is all about the freedom of girls to have wonderful and fantastic friendships (lmao), and has no parents, thus no ties to a cultural identity (so he soaks up other identities)(and writes books of justice-themed poetry). So, really, the only question is Midlander or Highlander? As Highlanders seem more war-like and Mamoru tends to enjoy throwing roses more than swinging swords, I’mma have to say Midlander.

Now, quick thoughts for others! Haruka – a Highlander Hyur or a Sea Wolf Roegadyn Michiru – Oh, Elezen, hands down. Wildwood variety. Setsuna – Elezen, or Hyur. Hotaru – Midlander Hyur or (teehee) Lalafell Chibi-Usa – Midlander Hyur or Dunesfolk Lalafell (you know she’d make a good businesswoman)(ALSO AN ADORABLE ONE)
I'll play around with the character creator again and see what comes up when I do these combos! And rather than make new names for them, it's easiest to meet other fans keeping original names. ^^' But keeping their civilian names rather than Sailor X because running around the city being called "Sailor" is just... well.... u.u idk. do not like XD. Maybe if I talk to people and they'd be cool with doing a Silver Millennium vibe, being called "Lady X" would be more fun, or even "Princess x". BUT ANYWAY IT'S PROBABLY NOT GOING TO HAPPEN SO HERE HAVE SOME FUN THOUGHTS.

Since I had a few fairly successful attempts at making sailor moon characters in gw2 I decided to see if anyone else in beta was trying to making them as I am. Warning the following screen shots are extremely high resolution. Sailor Moon and Sailor Saturn:
Spoiler:
*edit* Something went wrong with the upload and it messed up the picture. Trying to fix them. *edit2* Fixed it with an embedded imgur gallery. Still not likely to be dialup friendly.

So if I understand correctly, this is Square's answer to the more lackluster Final Fantasy XIV that was received poorly due to lack of maps and such a few years back?

it was entirely messed up. It was like the game hadnt even been finished and they released it. Add that to near impossible difficulty with leveling and an high learning curve for the first two months after release, and you have a ton of screaming and crying mmo players. I personally loved the original release classes- they were really original in a lot of things but majority rules.
...but seriously other than pet things like now conjurer and thurmaturge used to be, a realm reborn is fantastic and beautiful and fun to play.

Yeah, I know that was the main thing. That they basically sold you half a game at full price. I know my brother played the original and enjoyed it despite the flaws, which to him sounded like people who were just used to playing MMOs like WoW or something. Glad to hear that A Realm Reborn is doing well. Square hasn't exactly been on their A-game lately and I'm hoping for a comeback.
