I have started practicing my graphic making skills again on Gimp, and here is what I made in an hour... But how can I make these better? Any thoughts? Tips? Recommendations on what I can do to improve in the future?

Glad you have been practicing a lot lately! These are really cute! However, I'd sharpen them as well (smoothly), before coloring/adding textures/brushes/items etc.
Did you start working with textures already tho?

Don't just use one layer, duplicate the layers and set them to different opacities like this
Main image>brightness/contrast>levels>duplicate main image and set it on overlay>textures in different opacities>more textures>another duplicate of main image in another opacity.
And of course after everything is done, sharpen, it will make your graphic look more clean.
