History is boring, my ass! In this thread she will show you how interesting history can be!
(maybe, she'll also surprise me with those facts, who knows?)

(( If you miss the more serious part of history, don't worry! She'll also provide a timeline with the most important dates of the German history =) ))

Brief German History:

Before Germany became Germany, it was known as a couple different places such as the Holy Roman Empire, The Kingdom of Prussia, and the Weimar Republic.

The Cologne Cathedral that was finished being built in 1322, took 632 years to build.

Oktoberfest was first created in Munich on October 12, 1810. It is still a popular festival and has spread across the world. It was a wedding celebration for Prince Ludwig of Bavaria.

Before Germany was united into the Deutsches Reich in 1871, it was a group of small kingdoms and principalities.

July 28, 1914 was the start of World War 1.

In 1916, Germany was the first country to use Daylight Savings Time.

On November 9, 1918: Germany became a republic.

November 11, 1918, the treaty of Versailles was signed and ended World War 1.

Gummy Bears were invented by Hans Riegel, a German in the early 1920s.

January 30, 1933: Adolf Hitler was appointed the Chancellor of Germany and this began the Holocaust.

In 1934, Adolf Hitler declared himself Der Fuhrer and the Third Reich was created.

On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland and started World War 2.

May 7, 1945 Germany signed a surrender to the Allied Forces in France ending World War 2 in Germany.

May 8, 1945 is when the Holocaust ended in Germany. Did you know that it is a crime in Germany to deny the Holocaust?

In 1949, Germany was divided into East and West Germany.

The Berlin wall was built in August 13, 1961 and fell in November 9, 1989. In Berlin there are still markers on the ground where the wall initially was.

On October 3, 1990 both East and West Germany were reunited into Germany.

Angela Merkel, who is the Chancellor of Germany was ranked the world's most powerful person in 2015 in Forbes Magazine. In 2009, Mattel celebrated their 50th anniversary by making an Angela Merkel Barbie Doll.

Fun Historical Facts:

Over 100 German's have been awarded the Nobel Prize in their field.

The Christmas Tree (Tannenbaum) traditionally came from Germany.

The first book ever printed, was made in Germany.

The tale of the Pied Piper, or the Rattenfaenger Von Hameln originated in Hameln in Germany. It is a story based off of a legend starting in 1284 where a man came into town and claimed that he could get rid of all of the rats and mice in the town for a fee. When they agreed he pulled out his pipe and played a song which all of the rats and mice followed him to. They followed him into the river and drowned. When he went back and tried to claim the fee the people refused. He grew angry and left. When he came back, he was dressed differently and played his pipe, this time all of the children from age 4 and up followed him. He went into the mountain with them and disappeared. This legend ended up inspiring a fairy tale and to this day the legend is celebrated in the town of Hameln.

This could probably fit just as easily in the German Cities and Sights thread, but I thought I'd post it here.  I went to Germany once - back when it wasn't called Germany  German History 1695130124 .  More technically, it was called West Germany at the time (this was back in 1984 - geez, I'm dating myself), and I'm pretty sure I visited Cologne there.  I don't remember much about it, though.

Ohhhhh, this is nice! Very Happy

FRG and GDR were a thing waaaaay before my time I was 10 years too late. I only know about them from History class and I think it's pretty sad that we don't have a real impression of what it was like back then. On that note, I'm really jealous that you have! Then the difference between the old Cologne and the new Cologne is even greater! Very Happy

Oh, yeah.  I hadn't realized the age difference was that much  German History 1286073631 .  Anyway, we never tried to visit East Germany, so I can't really give an impression of what the Communist side was like.  But I remember West Germany as looking much the same as the rest of western Europe in terms of development.

I guess the main thing I remember from back then is that the Berlin Wall was up and in place at that time.  And it was always guarded by people in the Communist military, whose job was to prevent anyone from climbing over the wall from East Berlin to West Berlin.  Their primary method of preventing this was to shoot anyone they saw trying to escape from the Communist side to the free side, which usually killed them, sadly enough.

So every so often on the national news here in the U.S., there would be a short story during the newscast about another person being killed for trying to scale the wall like that.  Although I remember this story had an unusual twist one evening.  Someone had tried to scale the wall in the other direction - yes, from West to East.  (I never did hear why this person tried to do that.)  Sadly, the Communist guards shot him dead, also.

Why did I never see this post? xD

It's true that people who tried to climb over the wall got stopped all the time, sometimes even if they had to shoot them. However, I wouldn't say that everyone got shot. Most of them just went to jail or something like that isn't the best thing either but better than getting killed

Did you also hear about that guy who tunnelled under the wall back then? And not only he, but also a few others used it to cross the wall.

Most people didn't even know about all that stuff going on. People just lived their lives and as long as they didn't try to break any rules, they could do so without any problems. The people who lived in GDR, for example, never said that they hated it there or felt in danger.

Ah.  Then I didn't get the full picture from the news, because it never mentioned the majority that just went to jail.  I've come to realize that's typical.

No, I never heard about the guy who tunnelled under.  I must've missed that night on the news.  He must've been a clever person.

Now that I think about it, it would make sense for those who didn't break any of the rules to not feel any danger.  That must've been the real majority.

Yeah, media tend to play everything up and make it appear worse than it actually is. I can only say, based on the experiences of my family, that they didn't live that bad.
