In this Topic I want to give you a general overview over the occupation of Germany, how 2 seperate countries formed and later became one again. I may not have covered everything, but I wanted to keep this as short as possible, so you have a quick overview!
8th May 1945: Nazi Germany’s surrender
5th June 1945: The Allied Forces took control over Germany
1st July 1945: The USA and United Kingdom gave Saxony, Thuringia and Mecklenburg to the control of the Soviet Union and got control over the three West Sectors of Berlin
10th July 1945: France took control over the Saarland, which has been in German control and joins in as an Allied Force
2nd August 1945: The USA, the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union divided Germany into 3 occupied Zones in the Potsdam Conference
3rd-11th September 1945: Expropriation and nationalization of agriculturally establishments in the Soviet Occupation Zone
21st and 22nd April 1946: In the Soviet Occupation Zone, the parties KPD and SPD unite to form the SED
2nd December 1946: The Occupation Zones of the USA and UK are untied to form the Bizone
5th June 1947: To support the German economy, the Marshallplan is formed
25th November - 15h December 1947: The Allied Secretaries of State gathered in a conference. This conference was canceled because of Soviet criticism on the Bizone
Feburary - June 1948: The Western Allied Forces plan the future of Germany and so they worked out the Frankfurt Documents. As a reaction to this, the Soviet Union leaves the Allied Council.
20th June 1948: The D-Mark is introduced as the German currency in West Germany. As a reaction to this, the Soviet Union blocks off Eastern Germany, leaving the Western Parts of Berlin without a connection to West Germany.
8th April 1949: The Bizone becomes the Trizone with France’s Occupation Zone joining in. Western Germany becomes the BRD
12th May 1949: The Blockade which was blocking off West Berlin was ended.
14th August 1949: First elections in West Germany
7th September 1949: Konrad Adenauer becomes Chancellor of the BRD and the Country’s Capital becomes Bonn
7th October 1949: East Germany becomes the DDR, Willhelm Pieck becomes it’s President and East Berlin becomes the Countries Capital
1st January 1951: The first five-years-plan to regulate the economy is created in the DDR
26th May 1952: The ‘Germany Contract’ is signed, ending the occupation status of the BRD
27th May 1952: All telephone communication between the BRD and DDR becomes forbidden on behalf of the SED
25th March 1954: The DDR becomes it’s own country.
1st January 1957: The Saarland becomes a part of Germany
12th August 1961: 3290 People left the DDR to go into the BRD. To prevent more people from leaving the DDR, travelling between East and West Germany becomes forbidden
13th August 1961: The building of the Berlin Wall starts
9th November 1989: Fall of the Berlin Wall
3rd October 1990: the BRD and DDR become one again, forming the Germany we have today
